I'm a new player and given the community, I don't want to appear like I have no idea what I'm doing
I have a basic understanding of the game and have gone through most of the in-game training, but I still feel like there's a lot I don't know
Any tips would be appreciated
Oh and I've been playing with Lich most of the time. Is that a viable character?

That's a great resource. But just play a lot of player vs bot matches.
Lich is a great hero for new players, because he basically has unlimited mana. The game will really try your patience at times. There's a very slow learning curve.
Unfortunately I think this is a League of Legends board, so advice will be hard to come by on here.
Try the Dota 2 subreddit as well.

Going through the trainings will give you a good feel for how the game works and some of the items. Next step after that would be playing some bot games and figuring out more of the items and how they work and what it takes to make each one as well as learning what heroes skills do. Once you get a good feel for everything mixed in its best to start playing against people because it will give you the best feel for how the game runs since you can only learn so much from bots before you learn to abuse them. I would also suggest working more with one hero at first and learning alot about that one as it will help you figure out what they can do and have it translate to using other heroes afterwards.
If you would still have questions afterwards best way to learn besides playing is by watching streams of either tournaments or some of the popular casters like Purge, Draskyl( one of my favorites to watch because he explains a good bit of what he does), Merlini, and i know others play as well that will tell you why they do certain things at certain times.

Yeah I know it can get annoying with people who are always complaining about this and that when they are the ones that mess up. Best way to get around that is play with some friends or just mute anyone that only complains about things. It is one of those games that you have to be able to ignore people who just aren't helpful.
