He has always been considered a good/really good actor and he has found commercial success with Terminator and the Batman films. So does he continue to pursue money or does he go back to taking chances in movies like The Machinist?
I predict a Jack Nicholson like career, minus the late career comedies.
Lots of big budget dramas, mixed with some smaller, darker films and choice roles. Nothing to scoff at.

What's so great about his performance in the Prestige? It's a one note character.

Should my sarcasm meter be blaring right now?

I would love to see him in 10 years (after the Affleck franchise descends into ice related puns and gay jokes) as the much older Bruce Wayne in a Nolan version of The Dark Knight Returns.

Am I wrong in thinking Bale, and DiCaprio too, don't really play "sad" all that well, they just rock at being intense?

I guess so. There's not much meat to that character; Hugh Jackman had the more challenging role. He's fine in it, there's simply not much for him to do.

Among the unmentioned films, I liked him in Rescue Dawn, 3:10 to Yuma,Reign of Fire and even Public Enemies.

How?

It's The Prestige, man, not Citizen Kane. It's not a very good movie; it's one of Nolan's minor works, and that isn't saying very much.

he's fricking awesome in The Fighter
his performance as Dicky is probably in my top 5 acting performances of the last decade along with DDL in TWBB and Heath Ledger in TDK

Seriously, Bale was great in that movie. Twice.
And the movie is great in itself.
