I've bought handguns for some of my children. The youngest was 18. As mentioned by many already, handguns are just inherently more dangerous than shotguns or rifles. I don't know about your son, but 13 was too young for my children. FTR, minimum legal age to own a handgun in LA is 18. Have to be 21 to buy one.

So what would be wrong with buying the gun for him and he only touches the gun under the fathers supervision?
