Living in hotels/airports and only being home around 40 hours a week isn't all its cracked up to be.
But in the consulting world, thats the sacrifice you make.

Well, I make around 80k so I qualify. She makes 95k just starting out but has her own debt so even when we get married we will still qualify. I put in some obscene combined income and we still qualified.
Staggering but I manage to live with the awfulness.

I could probably live on $2,000 per month if I needed too. Minus the wife, I could live on much less.

If you are single, it is fantastic. Although, it can make meeting and sustaining new friendships/relationships more difficult.
Travel makes life more affordable...but it can be a PITA after a long haul.
I just finished an 11 week back-and-forth engagement. Couple weeks at home and about to start another eight week project. The variety, exposure and perks of the job are second to none though.
However, I do not understand how 45 year olds with a family travel this much.

Completely agree...I don't know how people with families can do this. Except that they 1)hate their home lives 2)really like the money.
I just had a week off as well and I'm back on a 2 week engagement in DC then probably heading out the west coast.
I'm with a small "implementation" management consulting firm based in New Hampshire. Been doing this for about 15 months now, lack of a decent social life sucks...but the advantages are pretty great as you stated.

Are you typically on longer term projects? When I think implementation I think 6-18 month projects. I'm alright blueprinting some of the new business processes and defining goals/vision/strategy...but when it comes to the actual nuts and bolts implementation I get out of the way realllllll quick.

I like my gig as it relates to travel. Usually 3 times a month but rarely over 2 nights away from home.

this sounds like a recipe for disaster and failure- if they offer you know ownership this is a bad deal heading south of south
What is the benefit supposed to be for you?

I come in on the front end and complete the business assessment. My goal is to figure out if there is a viable implementation project there.
A long term project usually follows the assessment, which I want no part of. I enjoy bouncing around to a different city every 2-6 weeks.

Work for a large company in BPO segment, doing mainly finance but involved in implementation of some backoffice functions for the client(state). I came in to clean up bad processes and completely botched pricing. No fun
