I did not want this thread to clutter up the thread on today's tragedy.

either buy or use a life line:

A simple 3/8" climbing rope tied to the trunk or a limb above your stand and tied to some structure at the ground.

use a smaller section of cord to tie in a prusik knot and use that to clip your harness too and slide up the rope with you as you are climbing.

you will be hooked in to the rope from ground to ground.

And if you don't want to make your own life line you can buy them ready to go...

These are great but pretty much useless for ladder stand users.

OK? The prusik knot/lifeline can easily be used with ladder stands as demonstrated in the video linked above.

I hate to be 'that guy' Purple but am I the only one who thinks your Prusik Knot looks like a wiener?

We've got these set up on all of our ladders and lock ons over 10 feet. It's easy to fall when its cold out. Peace of mind is worth it.

frick all those screw-in pegs

Ladder sticks FTW

Eta: I'm a big believer in the lifeline. Super easy and definitely worth the safety and peace of mind. I use on all of my lock-on's

I've never even been in a stand but I can't agree with this.

for anybody over 220 plus pounds I would suggest wrapping it a 4th time instead of the standard 3 loops.

The main rope would need to have more slack in it for a ladder stand and should be attached to the ground halfway between the tree trunk and the ladder feet. I will work better if the main line can be away from the trunk at the top attached to a sturdy limb (like the drawing).

on the video linked I think the life line is tied at the seat level on the ladder requiring you to switch connections at the top.

also ALWAYS use the 3 points of contact rule on ladders of any kind.

I did the homemade thing using 1/2" nylon rope but switched to these as they stretch a lot less and just feel sturdier. Also the load rating on hardware store rope just didn't give me the warm fuzzies and I think these are made of mountain climbing rope or something similar.

I honestly have never used any type of harness or safety rope in my 36 years in any of my ladder or climbing stands before but this year I will be using both for the first time.
