The GF is in her first year right at Shreveport right now. She studies a lot--supposedly (physicians, feel free to tell me I'm wrong) they have to learn 1/2-2/3 of what you learn in 4 years of med school in about 15 months. She shouldn't have trouble finding a job though

More like 1/5 of what we learn in two. Then we have two more years of clinicals and a minimum of 3 yrs of residency. 2nd yr med students don't know shite and NP's and PA's much less. I'm not against using them, it's the future. I have a new NP I'm breaking in. She needs to make sure she starts with a doc that will help her along once she gets out. I told mine that we'll treat her first year or two as a "residency". I go behind her on all except the most basic things.

Not having to know a lot seems like a perfect career for me.

Umm, No. Three didactic semesters compared to 4.5 for a med student, then a year or so of clinicals compared to 2 years for med students.
NP school is only requires 700-1000 clinical hours vs 2500 for PA, and about 3500 for a med student. There is no biochem, histology, immunology etc, basically all the background medical science other than anatomy and physiology.

I agree that you don't know shite coming out of school.

That is exactly how it should be- which makes it scary when NPs could basically practice independently right out of school.
