ESPN Radio -- Not Sean Payton -- (LSU should duplicate)

I think most would agree with this, so it is not as much to bring in a new idea as to repeat what I heard
Heard on ESPN Radio that there is some site that has a rating system for almost every kind of player performance there is for the NFL
And 4 Saints are at the top for pass rush.
Saints offense is not much better than last season, but the success is much different
Why? It is not Sean Payton, it is the combination of the offense being able to score and the defense doing enough to halt the opposing quarterback so that that opposing offense can not keep up....
LSU should worry about getting to the opposing QB and keeping coverage calls simple and clear.

Saints opponents are always down and having to throw

Score more points on offense and prevent your opponent from scoring as many points. That's the secret to winning games.

There is truth in that, but what about 2012?
Point being, a good offense needs a pass rush from the defense to be disruptive, and chances of winning is much greater...
Picayune and Advocate has several articles about the secondary, but the secondary could be helped by a pass rush
Helped greatly!
Proficient offense + pass rush is a winnign combo

The best defense is a good offense. Saints have been playing from ahead most of the year and the defense can rush the passer without worrying about the run.

That is what Les alluded to us doing.

Again, what about 2012?

well you actually have the emergence of new players like jordan, vacarro, lewis, etc excelling in a completely new system (and perhaps a much less complicated than the one that spags ran last yr).
it's a bit of apples and oranges.
LSU is a bit deficient in its back 7 this year. the front four isn't always getting a pash rush by themselves and chavis looks like a genius when his teams get pressure without blitzing.
but we've blown coverages in secondary and haven't always covered well. you need top notch corners on blitzes to hold down their end on the island. you need LB's that can cover underneath dump routes that become a necessity when facing a blitz. and most of all you need safeties who know what the frick they are seeing and know where their assignment is in man and zones.
chavis and i'm sure miles to some extent don't want to get beat deep and my bet is they worry about the secondary's ability to cover when LSU brings a blitz.

Jist of my post, sacrifice a few scores for some sacks...
Sacks are a good way to put more pressure on QBs as down and distance goes against them (and of course pressure on throws when guys are near-- Happened a few times to Mett on crucial plays in Athens)

Sooooo how has that worked out for the Big-12?

Then it's Katie bar the door, because with no real pressure the OL holds the pocket, the QB has all day to pass; the receiver has all day to get open, and the end result, when you play a UGA or Bama or Clemson, is you get beat deep and they score.

When is some defensive minded genius on the staff gonna connect the dots?

not saying i agree with the strategy just pointing out why they go in that direction. LSU defenses in the past wouldn't have a problem collapsing the pocket with the minumum rush. it opens up a world of options. that's why imo it's not just one thing on the D that needs fixin.
