On that particular play (which I hate using single plays to make overarching conclusions... great players look bad on some plays. It doesn't give enough sample size), it looks like Welter simply bit on the option read. He hesitated on the give, which is exactly why EVERY single college team and even NFL teams have gone to that play.

Welter, if he's playing fast and aware, should know to never bite on that when the option is between Todd Gurley and Aaron Murray, especially with the entire O-line pulling left. That was a run all the way. His instincts should have told him to commit to Gurley. It looks like he may have been thinking sack. My thing is, not just with Welter but the entire D, they are thinking too much. You have to COMMIT at this level of football. Can't hesitate.

As far as AJ, I have been especially critical of him. He hasn't played good football up to this point. However, I pointed out in another thread that Georgia was his best game to date. He played within himself better last game. Hopefully he continues to improve. The first 3 games he did not live up to his moniker.

All I can say is I might have to bump the thread where I along with a few others question the defense, particularly the line and safeties, and continually got bashed for it.

I find that at each level, the game gets faster, and not just in running speed. Things happen more quickly and players have less time to respond. Experience can make it flow better and help the decision process to proceed more quickly but I fear that this year LSU has too many kids who have to think a half second or longer more than you'd like, and that short period makes it harder to get off a block, harder to get to a hole in time, more likely to have a receiver run by you. The only cure is to keep playing and working on the correct decision being made more quickly.

Great post. Deserves reading (and re-reading so I quoted it).
