If you were basing your judgment on nothing but concert attendance, it wouldn't be crazy to assume that Phish is one of the best bands in the world. Of course, anyone with four hours or more of space between them and their last magic mushroom trip knows that's not the case. Phish is a terrible band.
Imagine I'm speaking as this guy for the first part of the next sentence.
"Well, it's not that they're a bad band, per se, it's just that what they do onstage doesn't really translate to the studio," some dirty hippie probably said just now. They're wrong, though, because if Phish (or the Grateful Dead before them) was a good band, they would find a way to make their shite work everywhere.
It's not impossible. Plenty of bands make great albums and also put on consistently great shows. Bruce Springsteen has been doing that for decades. If the only way you can pull a strong performance out of a band is to put them in front of thousands of adoring fans, it's not because they're awesome, it's because they're shitty songwriters who have to play minor variations of the same idea for minutes on end before it becomes even remotely listenable. Their only role in the music universe is to give the last few thousand people in the world who still do acid a relatively safe place to go when the planetarium is closed.
Whether fans want to admit it or not, bands like Phish didn't build their vast live following by making good music. They did it by consistently throwing great drug parties.
There are some exceptions in this particular realm right now. Pearl Jam has built the same kind of live following, but they did it on the strength of years and years worth of memorable songs and albums. Even the Dave Matthews Band manages to pair incessant noodling onstage with relatively tight studio work on occasion.
So let me ask you this: Is it fair to give someone like the Grateful Dead a pass as a "great" band even though all of their good albums are live albums and their studio stuff is mostly forgettable? Trick question, there are no good Grateful Dead albums. The live ones are the best, though, because, again, it's "hard to recreate what they do onstage within the confines of a studio, man."
Listen, I'm not saying people who make that claim about a band like Phish or Grateful Dead are incorrect. I'm just saying it means those bands are less talented than a lot of other bands.

This part is true.

Guy is pretty funny.

And the writer is full of shite. I'm not even a phan. Different types of art have different types of mediums. Improvisational music will always be better live. It's my understanding that the jam band thing is all about improvisation.

Live music>> Studio for any band worth a shite.

So is jazz but they record that in the studio pretty well.

This statement doesn't refute what the author is saying.
Live music is fricking amazing. Music never sounds better than it does when you hear it live and it's hitting you right in the chest.
But what the author is saying that a band that's worth their weight in dogshit can go into a studio and create good music. And I agree.

This makes negative sense.

Only time I've ever agreed with Burt Reynolds. I won't make it a habit.

I think phish and the grateful dead made good studio albums. They are just 15x better live
Posted on 9/26/13 at 5:42 pm to Burt Reynolds
Not all jazz. Some of it is just about the live performance.
Personally, I found the little Phish that I have listened to to be tedious and boring. It's just not my thing. But some people apparently like the experience of seeing them live. Which I imagine includes getting shite faced and all that jazz. But just because the studio side of them sucks, that doesn't discredit the live experience. Whatever that may be. I just thing that its incorrect to measure all bands by the same commercial rubric.

I think all bands should be measured by their live performance.

It makes sense. You just aren't thinking about it the right way. The point of improvisational music, to an extent, is the unique and personal experience that one has at a live performance. If a single copy is made then the unique experience and thus a large part of the point of improvisational music is lost.

Anytime someone puts Dave Matthews anywhere close to being as good as the dead (much less better) the AIDS virus runs rampant through an orphanage.

Glad I didn't have to agree with you again because what you wrote is completely stupid. And, to be clear, I'm referring to the second sentence, which is just absolute nonsense on every conceivable level.
Posted on 9/26/13 at 5:51 pm to Burt Reynolds
I don't know about that. Putting on a good performance can just be a different skill set than writing a good song.
There is some truth there in that bad musicians can and are made to sound better in studios.
