Another encouraging trend for the defense.

Outside the pass to Vincent Jackson (that was called back), I haven't seen a lot of passing over the top. It's mostly been short to intermediate stuff, and thanks to improved tackling, they've mostly stayed where they caught it.
Palmer tried going deep a couple of times and came up with nothing.
We're really keep the game in front of us, which is encouraging.

the pass to jackson was just a jump ball
KV may be a beast, but vjax is big, strong, and can jump like crazy.
I can't remember which game, but I know I've seen an opposing player open deep and overthrown...I've just seen that so many times I'm not sure if I've seen it this year.

I think I know what you're talking about. That was preseason against the Raiders. Somebody was wide open deep and Flynn was under pressure and didn't get the ball there. I remember thinking that we can't let that happen against the Falcons.
ETA: Have we played against any WRs that are deep threats? VJax is. Larry Fitzgerald? I don't really see White or Jones as a true "deep threat".

We've had great safety play this year. Short of missing a few tackles, our safeties have been spotless. I love Harper in his new role. Seems like his main objective every play is to make the tackle. That's what he excels in and I'm glad Rob has embraced that.

I am not use if Kenny slipped a little when he tried to plant his feet and jump, but he did not get into the air to play the ball at all. His feet never left the ground. I would think it had more to do with the field conditions than anything else. It was a weird play.

favorite thing to see...YAC. We have to be one of the best defenses at preventing this, or either used to the worst defense ever, but anyway I've seen vaccaro clean up so many plays and if the guy is in front of you, you're not scoring or moving the chains
We get teams into 3rd downs and capitalize on the opportunity. Defense is fun again!

Remember the first drive of preseason vs. the Chiefs when a lot of the jackasses on here were freaking the frick out? The majority of those passes were dump off / safety valve passes. Opposing offenses are having to settle for the intermediate shite and once they do, the defense is flocking to the ball and making tackles. It's all about the pressure on the QB - they can't find anyone open in the little bit of time they have.
It's gonna be hard to beat the Saints this season with this level of play.

The most noticeable difference is watching KV tackle. He bear hugs every time, even when he goes for the kill shot. I hope this is infectious to the rest of the team

KV bolsters my argument that a rule change that mandates wrapping up in the tackle won't eliminate the exciting, big hits that fans like to see.

JJ is every bit the deep threat Vincent Jackson is.
6'3", 230#, 4.3 and can jump out of the building.

Ive been arguing this for years now. Wrapping up is a fundamental element to defense. It needs to be taught again.

Yeah, KV's fundamentals can't be taught.
He's a force who plays the game smart.

warping up and tackling can most definitely be taught. Missie diving at peoples knees an stopping short and lowering your shoulder into their head is not the right way to tackle and is dangerous for everyone involved.

I don't know about making wrapping up a rule, but I think San Fran showed that you can be sound tackling while still rocking the snot out of people.

I expect the Saints to be better at it by Monday Night.

I just tweeted Shanle about it. He'll get right on that

he definitely looked flustered. That pressure from the D-line has been huge. That first pick he threw that Vaccaro got, the ball sailed on him.
I think he got inaccurate from the pressure. The coverage has been better but when you're getting pressure from your line, that is what makes a world of difference.

Sound tackling = wrapping up.
