good questions. Missoula is about twice the size of Bozeman, but the two are very similar towns, and Missoula is a little more urban and progressive. Lots of farms and ranches in both valleys, Bozeman at the south end of the Gallatin Valley wheras Missoula is at the north end of the Bitterroot. MSU is nationally recognized as a great engineering and agricultural school, and Montana is definitely the intellectual hub of the state with regard to the liberal arts. From that, you can guess the differences in alumni and fans, and it's similar to what you described with State and Ole Miss.
