The + / - is how much you get if you win if you bet $100.
- is the favorite.
+ is the underdog.
So if a team is +225, you win $225 for a $100 bet. So you will get $225 plus your $100 back.
If a teams is -225, then you will win $100 for a $225 bet. Or if you do the math, you'd win $44 for a $100 bet. So you'd get $44 plus your $100 back if you win.
The point spread is how much a team will win by. For example... if the Jets are +13 and the Patriots are -13, then that means in order to win if you picked the Jets, the Jets don't actually have to win the game, they just have to keep it within 13 points.
If you pick the Patriots, the Patriots have to win by more than 13 points.
The point of the point spread is to make it more fair. Picking between the Jets and Patriots is too easy and there is no money in that. Giving a team what is basically a "handicap" by using a point spread makes a more interesting bet.

Thanks so much. I have no actual interest in gambling. I just wanted to understand the predictions in articles. I have always wanted to know this. Thanks for the tutorial. I get it. And thanks for not making me feel stupid for asking a question. ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcool.gif)
