Why take that chance when you can force a team to go 80 yards?
Because they CAN go 80 yards to win in 3:12.
eta: And I'll hasten to say that if Jackson or Gonzales had hung on almost EVERYBODY would be agreeing with me.

no shite they can
but the defense didn't play THAT bad today. You miss the conversion and you are giving them half that field to go to overtime.
Pretty sure it's common sense and percentages at that point for Payton.

Actually, statistical studies have shown that YOU GO FOR IT down there. Write to Virgil Carter.

What shouldn't have happened was the time out shouldn't have been called. That was a very bad decision.
He also made a major mistake after Atlanta had a 2nd and goal by not using his timeout. Atlanta bailed him out by taking a timeout themselves.

Contrary to a totally mindless opinion previously expressed in this thread, you call a timeout ONLY if you intend to go for it. If the timeout happens, as it did, it's the same thing.

Both arguments have valid reasoning to them. It's just a matter of your gut feeling. Personally, I agree with Rex. I would have gone for it.

Coming in late ... but the right call was made.
Go up 6.
Touchdowns are hard to get
Anyone saying otherwise is being silly

With three times out left I'd maybe kick the field goal... maybe.... but with only one left? No way. Made for a thrilling finish, though... I'll give him that.
Stay on the Poli Board, Rex. We go for it on first down there and come up short we lose this game.

Something called common sense would override your statistics, Rex. Try inserting some common sense into your political ideology as well

On what? A touchdown?

ou miss it, the other team has 60 yards to go for a field goal to tie
Which they did easily. But obviously we didn't know that at the time.
So basically the question is, what do you think is harder for the opponent to do, get in the endzone with under two mins or kick a FG to tie it and then most likely get sent to OT. You can't just assume you're going to make that 4th down, especially with the way the offense seemed out of sync all game. And did you forget who their kicker is? Matt Bryant doesn't miss.
And even if they had scored there, I probably would have been pissed, but I know that what they did was right. You just have to hope your defense can hold keep them out of the endzone. if not you're playing for OT basically if you miss it. If it had been another game where I feel like the offense was more in sync, maybe.

Don't try to 'splain it to him. He won't get it.
That's why he loves Obama so much, too - he don't get it.

I agree, he should have just taken a delay of game instead if burning that timeout.
I was pleasantly surprised when ATL took their second TO, I thought for sure CSP was gonna burn his last one right there.

I would have went for it on 4th also.
Posted on 9/8/13 at 9:04 pm to Rex
No he should not have, and you saw exactly why.
Posted on 9/8/13 at 9:07 pm to diat150
I was thinking the same. shite just go for it.

Down by 3, the worst you get is OT. They don't even try for the TD.
Down by 6, you "could" lose, and seeing this defense historically, you understand why people (myself included) wanted them to go for it.
Down by 10, GAME OVER.
Plus, if you don't get it, they have 16 extra yards to go.
And finally, has that Super Bowl conversion play to Moore ever NOT worked when you needed 2 yards or a touchdown?

The "by the book" decision is without question to kick the FG.
The error (and I think it was a major error) was in the use of the timeout...and the failure to use one after Atlanta's 2nd down and goal play (Mike Smith bailed Payton out).
