If he wears the eligible number (not 50-79) then he doesn't have to check in with the ref. I have no idea if that's why they are doing it, but that's the only applicable rule that applies to the situation.

Desean smith caught a nice 14 yd in route. His first of many Lsu catches. The future is bright. Even the second team oline was opening holes.
