This is the story IIRC. Fire Marshall forced LSU to limit the # of students in the SS.

What's interesting today is that there are localized pockets in the SS that are every bit as dense as was the whole SS in '83. If the ability to evacuate students from the higher sections is the concern, then ok. If other, it would seem the same problem exists today as then just on a lesser scale.

Also, I thought the "capcity" of TS then was approx 76K, not 79K. Can someone confirm?

I was at that game. "Official" capacity was 78,000 at that time. And you are correct, the difference was the number of students attending the game-they were the only persons without assigned seats. At that time, there was no limit to the number of students allowed in. If they had a valid student ID, they got in.
