LSU is using a scholarship on a Backup High School Kicker

I was skeptical when LSU took Cameron Gamble's commitment. I watched him on film and while he had a big leg, I had major issues with his approach. I was also skeptical on his accuracy.
People were saying to trust the staff and taking a kicker is warranted.
But Cameron Gamble has been the backup kicker to Andrew Hitscherich for Flower Mound each of the past 3 seasons when it comes to FGs and PATs. He is 1 for 2 on field goals in his entire high school career and is not placekicking this year either.
I know kickoffs are an important aspect of the game, but is LSU really using a scholarship on strictly a kickoff guy in arguably the most loaded class in Louisiana history?
Check the stats for yourself.

This absolutely boggles my mind. I don't want to rip on a kid, but this makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

Considering the amount of talent in this years class considering LSU it's a bit questionable to say the least.

(a) random tigerdroppings member that researched stats on a kicker. Or (b) LSU's staff that actually worked out and put the recruit to the test. LSU doesn't give away scholarships like McDonald's monopoly pieces. I'll trust the staff.

Pretty much all you can do when it comes to offering kickers. He earned his offer at the special teams camp, so they saw something they liked with him.

It doesn't at the very least raise an eyebrow that he doesn't kick field goals for his high school team? Is LSU going to have 2 kickoff guys on scholarship next year or are they planning on trotting out someone who has never kicked under pressure next year as the field goal kicker when they have a capable walk-on? After Colby D has a solid year, Gamble will be Dalton Botts'ed. I just don't know why they have to even get the kid's hopes up.

Are you sure he's getting a scholarship? He's committed to play for the Tigers.

NO concerns over here. Kicker had to earn a scholly just like any other recruit that comes to LSU camps. The coaches know how many players they can recruit this year and they understand 14' is full of talent. If a no named kicker gets a scholly out of thin air, then the only assumption that comes to mind is "this dude must be a hell of a kicker". Numbers are too tight for us to give away full rides to question marks. This dude must be the real deal.

Considering Delahoussaye will kick for 3 more years after this and Hairston has one more year I don't see why a schollie is being used on a K this year especially when the majority of your kickers have been walk ons.

After LSU has a successful season and demonstrates offensive prowess, top recruits will be knocking down the door and it will be difficult to justify this offer.

His offer might have been conditional from the beginning. Most kickers know they will have to grayshirt or even walk on for a roster spot.

the Craig Ford kid from Hahnville is someone they should go after!

Exactly. A lot of these guys are told you get the scholarship if you win the job.

Have we ever had an AA kicker? Not a flame, I just can't remember.
Heck, my son has only kicked in one Jamboree and is only a miss away from matching those stats.
