I do like the option of being able to play PS3 games on the PS4, but that begs the question, why not just make the thing backwards compatible with some games(Although this would be handy with the Vita)?

Not possible, streaming is all on the server nothing hardware related to the PS4.
If you were to do a disc based backwards compatibility you'd have to fit the PS3 hardware onto the motherboard along with the PS4 hardware.
Then you'd have a host of other problems such as switching between CPU's for certain tasks PS3 related and tasks PS4 related.
All of that isn't necessary via streaming.
