I couldn't fathom having to make this decision but this seems close to the point where his quality of life would improve if he opts to amputate.

I'm not saying it would be an easy decision AT ALL. I can even imagine having to make it but frick. I'd bet a pretty penny he'll be a happier guy if he decides to amputate it.
