Gives it some depth of flavor. I like a smidgen of a sweet component in mine, as well, but not too much, so I use semi sweet, but Otis swears by the Hershey bar. I did that once and it was fine. A little too much sweet for me. Half Hershey and half semi or unsweetened would be fine for me. The amount depends on how much chili you're making. I add and taste until I hit the magic mark.
