Yes, pre-FL.

Spurrier had been HC in the USFL thru '85. When Arnsparger left after only 3 (successful) seasons in '86, Spurrier wanted the job. As a previos poster mentioned, we hired Archer (DB coach under Arnsparger) from within. Archer lasted 4 seasons. Arnsparger subsequently took the UF AD job and hired Spurrier at UF in '90. Over the next 12 seasons we went 1-11 vs UF.

My guess is that even had Spurrier came here, he would have left for UF in '90. However, he would have left a very strong program here instead of the bog left by Archer.

ETA: corrected Spurrier's pre '86 coaching experience per H-Town Tiger's sternly worded (and correct) rebuke.

Spurrier was the coach at Duke. When Arnsparger left after only 3 (successful) seasons in '86

This just proves the above posters point that usually people don't know what they are talking about when looking back with 20/20 hindsight.

Spurrier's first year at Duke was 1987, the same as Archer's first year at LSU

Here is his resume thru the 86 season

1978 QB Coach Florida
1979 QB C Ga Tech
1980-82 OC Duke
1983-85 HC Tampa Bay Bandits (USFL)
1978-89 HC Duke

In 1986 Arnsparger's last year at LSU Spurrier DID NOT COACH anywhere.

His only HC experience was in the USFL (though he did do ok) He had been OC at Duke. The same offseason as LSU hired Archer and Duke hired SOS, Alabama, Texas and USC all hired new coaches. Hindsight is 20/20. SOS may have said he wanted the LSU job, but it Dec 1986 it was not clear how good of a HC he would be. I really wish this myth would die the death it deserves.

When the job opening was known or projected, Spurrier and Shanahan were at some event and worked the room of LSU boosters. (I think Mack Brown was the 4th on the short list, along with Archer.) When they compared notes, they concluded that Archer's hiring was a done deal and they were just top cover.

Reportedly that's why Spurrier has had a bug in his bonnet for LSU ever since.
