IRS Mileage Log

Traveling business people how well do you keep your mileage log? Is the IRS strict about every single detail of the trip and how many miles per day?

my tax professor told us that he would keep a log for 2 different months out of the year and would just use that as justification for the rest of the year

So it sounds like they would accept a few thousand miles?

This would get disallowed so fast. The only reason you would need a log book is if you get audited. If you do get audited, you will need a detailed record of all mileage/trips that tie in to what you took on the tax return. You can not use 2 months as justification. If your mileage is about the same every month you can do this to come up with a number, but if it gets called into question that will not work.

I've never had to do it but that what the tax prof said he does.
Just pick two random months out of the year and track your mileage for the months. If you ever get audited then just provide the log and state that this was your typical mileage for every month of the year.
BTW, this was the tax professor that said that LINK
all those letters behind his name gotta means he knows what he's talking about

My truck has advertisement on it so I just use all mileage for the year. I will stop doing that depending on responses here

you can claim whatever mileage you want and it won't be an issue...unless you get audited

I try to write an approximate mileage each day on my calendar for that day (or previous day). I'm not exact but close enough to get a number I'm comfortable with and I keep all of my old calendars.

I write mine down everyday. I wouldn't feel comfortable approximating my mileage.

Is an audit the same thing as a letter from the IRS saying they need more information on business expenses schedule a?

everyone i know in my company claims all their miles for the year plus gets reimbursed .55 per mile from our company. theyve done it for years and nobody has ever been questioned. the tax lady told them if they ever were audited she could use one of her standard templetes and just input numbers to show them

yeah not really how it's suppose to be done (my brother does the same thing FYI)
if you are getting reimbursed for mileage then you aren't allowed to claim the deduction. Again, not really an issue unless you get audited

If your company reimburses you .30 per mile you can use the difference and use that as a deduction, which would be .26 cents per mile.

batman yes i know thats the point, everyone i know double dips and even if they get audited their tax lady has a fake templete.
so shady

My understanding:
A mileage log has to show:
1. date
2. business purpose of trip
3. mileage (start/finish)
I do a daily entry. It is legit.

It's an amended return for a few years ago. Are they really picky? What if you're missing a few months?
Posted on 8/14/13 at 7:54 pm to Paul Allen
I do. I use Microsoft streets and trips for my routes and it saves it on there

The IRS doesn't fall for this anymore. An advertisement doesn't justify 100% business use. If you were to be audited, you would still have to prove business use, aside from the fact you drive around with a sticker on your truck.
