What the WR battle looks like now.

Colston and Moore are locks.
Toon looks to be safe, and Stills was named by Brees himself as a possible replacement for Morgan.
That leaves one more spot open (ignoring Roby's spot). This person would be inactive on most game days, except for say Breaston, seeing as he's both a veteran and an option in the return game.
Tanner
Knows the system. Runs good routes and get's open. Probably has the best hands of all of the candidates vying for the 5th spot. Limited ability, but reliable.
Breaston
Career has be derailed by injuries, but shown he can be productive when healthy. Played in a similar vertical passing offense in his time with Arizona. Could give us a better option returning kicks than Cadet, but that would be exposing him to some violent hits. That might not be a great idea with his injury history, but it could be a way the coaching staff test his health before the season starts. If he shows he's a veteran in preseason, I give him the edge. If the Saints decide to keep someone else, he could be someone we call on later in the year.
Fayson
He impressed the coaching staff last year in camp, but he's been limited so far this year. He sat out 4 days with "dehydration," then promptly cut his hand after his return. I don't really see him as a likely candidate unless he just outshines everyone else. He may need another year of development.
Hakim
Hands down the fastest guy on the team, but he's been cursed by drops. I don't think he's ready to be on a 53 man roster, and I doubt any other team would want to occupy a roster spot to develop him during the season. He should be a prime candidate for the PS.
Parker
Only has 44 career catches, but he's coming into his 4th year. He had no catches last year. I'm not sure if he was put on the IR. He managed 40 catches and 3 td's in his 2nd with Josh Freeman throwing to him. Reports from camp have him catching a lot of deep balls, so he could be a sleeper candidate to replace Morgan. At 6' 200, he has decent size and could be a viable run blocker.
The remaining candidates are Tim Toone and Brent Leonard, but I don't consider either one a serious candidate.
Thoughts?

Breaston as long as he stays healthy.

Hakim would be the kind of guy you'd want to emerge from this group, because he has the most potential. You can't coach that kind of speed. It sucks that he has been dropping so many passes in camp. He'll get a chance to earn the spot, but it's not looking likely.
I think it'll come down to Breaston, Tanner and Parker

I think Tanner leads now but it comes down to Breaston and Tanner in the end.

Has Toon been looking good at camp ?
Posted on 8/8/13 at 8:40 am to TigerWise
Yes, like really good. He was tentative coming into camp last year. His foot wasn't completely healthy, so they decided to go ahead and fix it. He spent last year just learning the offense, and now that he's healthy, he's putting it all together.
I think he had his foot injury during the combine, and that may have been why he dropped to the 4th round. He's faster than people think.

Good to hear. I can keep him in the 15th RD in my fantasy league.

Can Hakim return kicks? If so, that might be a reason to keep him on the team for the first couple of games and see if he can stretch the field and catch the ball on deep routes in a game.
The WR Battle IMO:
Locks:
Colston
Moore
Toon
Stills
Bubble:
Breaston
Hakim
Fayson
Long Shot:
Fayson
Parker
Tanner
I'm not sure about Fayson, I like him as a project, but think he will probably end up on the practice squad, so I listed him on the bubble and as a long shot.

Hakims not making the 53 this year, he's entirely too raw. I think if they can teach him to run a route and soften up his hands, he will be another diamond in the rough the Saints may want to keep hidden from other teams.
After the first 4, it's between Tanner and Breaston IMO. Everyone has been raving about Tanner as a "vacuum cleaner" who catches anything you throw his way. That may give him the edge considering our style of possession offense via passing instead of running.

Good thread. Ladies and gentlemen this is how you start a thread.
I haven't been to camp yet, so I can't give much to this topic yet. However, you bet your arse I'll be watching Friday night and taking notes.

A couple of these "last spot" guys have practice squad eligibility. Expect one of them to be there. Unless they truly outperform Breaston in the preseason, I give the nod to Breaston.
None of the other guys have shot, IMO.

I always just assume Roby is in. Every year people say he won't make it. Every year he's a special teams stud
Posted on 8/8/13 at 9:53 am to LSUFreek
Roby looked like a receiver last preseason as well, and then promptly disappeared with the season started.
This actually brings up another important point: as much as we wanna be deep at receiver, realistically only 3 of them will see significant catches. You have two TE's that can catch, as well as two running backs who'll get their usual share of catches.

The 4th and 5th spot are between stills tanner and breaston. How they perform in actual games will say alot. CSP likes/demands consistency from his receivers which is why I don't have stills as a lock.

I agree, but it might be hard to sneak Stills to the practice squad. He has an attractive skill set. Plus he's been getting positive reviews ever since they've put on pads.

Colston
Moore
Toon
Breaston
Roby
Stills
I don't see too much issue here.

we just need that deep home-run threat imo. the others who will get touches are all good receivers, but none of our main weapons are gonna burn you down the field. Thats why morgan was so great for us last year, every catch was a homerun that the defense didn't notice

Breaston and Stills will fill the Morgan void. Or at least they will try.
