Is it possible to teach an 'old' dog new tricks?

I have a boxer who turned 3 a month ago.. He is pretty smart for a dog who hits his head on everything.. He's very obedient and I rarely have to tell him things twice..
Do you think it's possible for me to teach him new tricks? I've tried to get him to shake and do a few other things, but I'm starting to think the old cliche is true.. Do y'all think its possible? Any tips?

Of course you can. Once you teach a dog how to learn it never leaves them.

Set up a scenario where the dog does the trick you want by accident then praise him. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Lots of praise for doing what is asked of him.

I don't know, it's pretty frustrating.. I've been trying to teach him how to shake the past week or so, and I feel like I'm talking to a woman... He just looks at me like I'm stupid

Shake as in a paw/hand shake?
Shake as in shedding water on command after a swim?

Hopefully he knows "sit" and this will make it easier.
"Sit" then reach down and grab his paw and say SHAKE then let go and pet him up real good. Do that several times a day and keep it fun.
He might do better some days than others so don't loose your cool.

I've had people tell me that saying before "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" and I always say....you damn right cause a true old dog already knows every trick he needs to learn.

Use a small treat and repeat the sitting and shaking of the paw. He will get it. Push his butt down. Take his paw. All while saying the commands. He can do it! After two years of watching our dog drag my wife around by the leash, I took him for a nice long walk, made him walk even with me, stay when we stopped, and wait for me to walk in the door first before he goes in. He is my bitch now.

Sounds like your dog has you well trained.
