Yahoo's Shutdown Corner Previews The Saints

came across this article earlier.
LINK
For those that are interested in this type of thing, they have the Saints at #14 in their power rankings.
I thought this was an interesting comment:
even though the Saints swept the Bucs last year, they upgraded their defense more than any other team in the division I think. It seems to me that the same hype was given to the Panthers going into last season also. Something about them finishing strong and that carrying over into next year. They have the toughest schedule of any team in the league so I'm not buying into them being a threat.
A little tidbit on Martez Wilson:
I guess he might still be a little raw because he's moved around a lot. He wasn't a DE in his rookie year as we know but sometimes these articles leave out some other info.
Isn't Will Smith still going to play with a hand in the ground though? I'm not buying some of the shite I've read concerning his role this year. If there is some truth to that though then God help us

The Saints are no longer the top team in the NFC South. That distinction now belongs to the Atlanta Falcons, and both the Saints and Falcons should be wary of the Carolina Panthers.

A little tidbit on Martez Wilson:

Player you might not have heard of yet, but will soon: The Saints drafted Martez Wilson out of Illinois in the third-round of the 2011 NFL draft. Wilson played inside linebacker in college, but the Saints moved him to defensive end. With the team moving to a 3-4 defense, Wilson is now slated to play outside linebacker where he could be successful as an edge rusher. In 333 snaps in 29 games over the last two seasons, Wilson has four sacks and nine quarterback hits.
I guess he might still be a little raw because he's moved around a lot. He wasn't a DE in his rookie year as we know but sometimes these articles leave out some other info.

As the Saints change to a 3-4 base defense under Rob Ryan, the biggest question mark is at outside linebacker. The Saints are attempting to move 32-year-old Will Smith, a 282-pound defensive end, to the position, which should be interesting when he has to drop into coverage.

Stat Fact: Saints defense has allowed 14 pass plays of 40 yds or more in the last two seasons.
It will continue to be this way until we get pressure on the QB and a SS and FS who knows how to take the right angles to the ball.

vaccaro, no problem!
I've got a good feeling that when our starting DL becomes jordan-jenkins-hicks the OLBs are going to have a field day.

Is the roster better, worse or about the same?:
On paper, the roster appears to be worse. Gone are left tackle Jermon Bushrod, wide receiver Devery Henderson and defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis
And at this point I lose faith in the writer's credentials.

The Saints and the Falcons have been trading places back and forth on the top since 08. I see the trend continuing this year.

bullshite.
Addition by subtraction.

I feel you. Hope your right! Kinda nervous about our OLB's. Especially Will Smith.

don't forget Bunkley. Not real sure where he will play but I hope he sees the field more than he did last year. He was another player who seemed to be left out a little more because Spags ran a lot of nickel defenses that he wasn't apart of.
Picking Vaccaro seems like it will give the secondary a little more flexibility, especially helping Jenkins. Had we gone with a D-lineman/OLB instead, we'd probably still be seeing plenty of Roman Harper... so I'm okay with Vaccaro.
I hate to bash Roman but you need a versatile safety in today's NFL.

Agree. We will be better on the interior!

I knew that line about Ellis would get a bite
he sort of has a point with Devery. I thought Devery had been a pretty decent contributor over the years and now we'll need one of the young WR's to step up.
I can't really ever remembering anyone really praising our offensive tackles over the last few years. It's usually, "Well he isn't that good anyway but it doesn't matter because Brees gets the ball out so quick." So we'll see how life without Bushrod is. I remember thinking he would be a weak link at first because he wasn't very experienced but in the end, he did good enough.

The Vaccaro pick was all about versatility. I've said this before, but just having Harper on the field tips your hand. There's no trickery unless dropping Harper into coverage is a trick, but that's a horrible trick.

He had to find some reason why we got worse and those are the easy answers.

yeah, same here.
I promise you people were saying the same thing about Carolina last year though. They did improve their record in 2012, but you can count on us not being swept by them this year.
There is no way in hell an offense under the coaching of Mike Shula will score more going against a team with Sean Payton calling the plays.
Tampa Bay finishes third, Carolina last IMO.

Love Devery but he had 22 catches last year and 4 TDs the last 3 years.

Lol, first Matt Ryan is better than Drew Brees now the Carolina fvcking Panthers are ranked above us? This season needs to start already!
Do they serve free snowballs in ferrytale land?

LOL. I'll respect the Panthers when they field a formidable secondary.

I think he needs to at least drop down to 270 is not lower. Those pictures of him during OTA's were pitiful. He looked like a DT.

I still say NT is in the cards.

I have zero worries that Smith will be a starting OLB Paddy.
He was too slow getting to the edge vs the run as a end. You could clearly see the difference in he and Cam speed wise.
Situational rusher IF he makes the team. I still have faith in Merica
