of course it matters more these years when the SEC and a national championship hang in the balance.

And besides... those years when Bama had Tennessee in the 90s LSU was still playing Florida (and Florida was better than Tenn) - so it would have been strange for Bama to complain about LSU's opponent at any point in the last couple decades
