Homebrewing: It's more fun than work

I am researching a little to build a recipe for a black IPA, and came across a recipe that said to dry hop with 2 oz of hops for 3 days, remove them, then dry hop with 2 more for 4 days
Why remove them, why not just add 2 more?

Don't know why you would remove them. And 3 days isn't enough time IMO. 5 days would be better. then add the second round and let sit for another 5 days.

At what temperature?

In my Ipa book, when they list the Pliny the elder recipe that method of dry hop is used. Claims that Vinny thinks it produces better aroma and flavor with short contact times

that's what I was thinking too

I got this from a Wookey Jack clone where the guy making it emailed and worked on it with a guy from Firestone Walker

Not in my experience. I've tried his method. After 3 days I was not getting much aroma. After 5 it was more pronounced. Maybe at a large scale the aroma comes out faster. I should add I use pellets most the time for dry hopping. I will use cones if they are available but often they are not.

Hmm, maybe I got the two confused.
Let me point out that I let it go for 5-7 days. So I was just passing that info (albeit mis-credited) along.

same here, I typically dry hop 5-7 days @ between 67-69F.
Here is an interesting article by Vinnie Cilurzo that was in Zymurgy a few years back. I think this was right after Russian River opened their new brewery, so he may have changes his processes since then.

Thanks for that link. We will be brewing a Pliny kit in a few weeks and it's good to see what he has to say about it.

I know this has been covered before, but do you guys typically dry hop in a hop bag or just toss the pellets/cones in then cold crash before bottling/kegging?
I've been doing the hop bags, but am considering the just-toss-em-in method for my Citra IPA that's ready for the dry hopping tonight or tomorrow.

I just throw my hops in. No concerns about sanitizing a bag or anything.

I usually sanitize a bag and bag the hops.

This is what I do too. But I can totally see just throwing the hops in and crashing before siphoning.
Anyone ever have issues with hop matter making it into the keg?

I just throw mine in, usually in a hop sock...no more than one oz to a sock. Whole cones i put directly in with no bag as my throat on the glass carboy is narrow.

Thinking I'll just put a mesh bag on the filter before siphoning to the keg if I do chunk the hops directly in.

I never seem to have an issue.

That's what I do. Just curious if everyone else did that too.

I know others do this but I had hell keeping the siphon going with a bag on it
