Starting to collect again for my son and curious if anyone still buys baseball cards anymore and what are some opinions on which kinds to buy.

Why not just make your own baseball cards on the computer

I started again, I thought it would be cool to do with my son. He's only 3 but he still likes it.
What do you want to know? Like what to bust or what cards individually?

Middle to late 80s was the decline of baseball cards. Topps overproduction of that crappy wooden framed looking border saturated the market. Now its hard to figure out which sets are worth collecting. If you just want cards he can play with buy them from Walmart the sell packs. If you are looking for nice sets that may have some possible value in the future go to the topps webpage and look around, they have a few sets that look nice that they sell in limited numbers. I had a friend who owned a shop in Ohio and he told me back in the middle 90's to just buy individual rookie cards from shops it would save me money because really it was the only cards that would hold their value if the player turned out to be HOFer. But with baseball sometimes you can't tell who the rookie is because some stay in the minors forever and then come up have a great season 5 years after they were drafted. So they will call it that guys rookie season but its not it was 5 years ago when he got drafted.

The market is low right now. But I'm itching to get back in. It's just so fun.

I loved em when I was a kid...there were so many cards I dreamed of owning
Now the market is so shite that I'm buying all the cards I wanted for the nostalgia effect

It will suck for him to have no one to trade with. That was a highlight of my childhood. Trading cards with friends and buying individual cards at Town Crier and spots in the mall. My favorite cards were SPX and Topps Finest.

I loved Upper Deck when they came out, and also Topps Stadium Club. When threads like these appear it really makes me wants me to dig up my collection and check the values.

From the 80s and 90s?
No, you don't.
Cards from the 80s and 90s aren't worth shite.

I used to but not anymore, although I wasn't into the whole trading them. My favorite is either Ken Griffey Jr. (early in his career) or an Al Kaline (which I got autographed as a kid). when I did buy, I didn't really care as long as they weren't that expensive.

Unless you happen to be sitting on cases of 1984 Fleer Update and 1993 SP, your collection isn't worth jack.
Look your cards up on eBay if you don't believe. Nobody cares about your Mark McGwire olympic card.

Have your son try out the topps bunt app.

I'd love to get back into it to collect with my son if there was a decent card shop around. I'm not driving to Chucks in Albany.
Buying, trading, and hanging out in the card shop to see what other people pull from the packs was the highlight of it all. Buying cards online just isn't as fun.
