i'd rather be back in the playoffs, which would be a vast improvement over last season

If we still had the pick, yeah, I would rather make the playoffs. But I just don't want to be in that position where you aren't good enough to contend and too good for the lotto.
That's what worries me about this team.

I'm not saying that at all.
Small market teams have to build through the draft. Jrue is a great piece to this team no doubt, but I think we are still missing a piece to really put this team in contention.

And that's the issue. We can hope all we want, but we have no reason to believe Eric Gordon will play more than 50+ games this season. I also hope Davis' body continues to mature because those little injuries can add up fast.

Tanking again is not an option. This isn't a fricking video game. I don't understand people some times.
Even if we don't make the trade we are prob still good enough to put us outside of where we want to be.

The Pelicans 2014 pick next season won't mean much if they make the 7th seed in the playoffs. Then you're looking at a high pick in then teens that was traded.

If this team isn't winning much (for whatever unforeseen reason) after the first couple of months , it most definitely is.

quote:I agree. even without the jrue trade IF we remained healthy we'd be somewhere around the 10th pick maybe a little higher with some lucky breaks imo. unless we'd beat the odds no way we get an early pick. if we keep putting our hopes in unproven draft picks we are doomed

If we want to follow the OKC model, that's the risk we would have to take.

I don't think.
How would you go about it?
Do you have season tickets?

quote:do you know how extremely luck they got and how small the odds of ever replicating that again are? we have a legit big 3 in jrue, Gordon and AD, granted it is contingent on health but much less risky than draft picks. take a look at past drafts and how many lottery picks pan out to be superstars the number is very small

We'll be starting next season with a new head coach and most probably a new GM.

You would have to think about it. If (again that's the key word in all of these doomsday/best-case scenarios) this team narrowly misses the playoffs, you are effectively screwed for the next season because you have no pick and little cap space.

No, Wiggins is not guaranteed to go #1. He's impressive, but so was shabazz coming out of high school
Yes Wiggins is guaranteed to go number 1. Shabazz was number 1 in a horrible high school class. That's the reason this draft was perceived so weak.

It was very lucky and the chances of it happening again are small, but that's the only surefire way small market teams can compete.

That's not a legit big three then. It's all based on potential.

That is the biggest miss-use of that term I have ever seen. In-between the 3, you have one all star appearance (not even a start). You are projecting off of pure potential and hoping that the most fragile player in the NBA doesn't get hurt again.
