In Superman 2 he turned Zod and his minions into mere mortals before doing any bone crushing and killing.
Posted on 6/26/13 at 9:27 am to illuminatic
The only thing that bothered me about this movie was when he slowly dodged the slowly moving oil tanker that was pushed towards him and lets it blow up at the foundation of a parking garage behind him. I was thinking, Really? That tanker shouldnt have been too hard to stop
Plus with the way it sounded when he broke Zod's neck, they should have shown Zod laying on his stomach with his neck twisted 180 degrees. That would have been crazy

I get that a lot.
I don't care.

Ace is good for the board. He has trollish opinions but isn't trolling and has pretty legitimate reasoning to back up his thoughts. He also doesn't come off as a douche elitist like other movie board contrarians.
Keep doin what you do Ace

Which makes what he did in Superman II even worse than what he did in Man of Steel. At least in Man of Steel Zod was still very much a threat. In Superman II, he had been turned into a mortal being and was at the mercy of Superman. What does Kal-El do? He kills Zod in cold blood even though the dude was mortal and no longer a threat to him.

Yep. He could have simply rounded them up and dropped them off directly into prison without a trial like he did at the end of Superman The Movie with Lex and Otis (I guess he forgot the whole justice and American Way stuff). Instead, he tosses a helpless Zod into a bottomless pit, allows the dumb guy to fall to his death trying to fly, and then grins as Lois punches the chick in the grill who also falls into a pit.
And then after getting his powers back, he can't leave well enough alone and decides he needs to go rough up the trucker at the Diner who beat the shite out of him when he got rid of his powers to frick Margot Kidder.
I swear nostalgia may be one of our strongest emotional crutches. It's the only way people continue to talk about those first two movies as if they're awesome. Outside of Reeve in the suit, they are pretty terrible.

fwiw he didn't kill Zod in Superman II
it sure as shite seems like he did, but there's a deleted scene where they're picked up by some police council or some shite.

Richard Donner says in the Donner Cut of Superman II that Zod and his henchmen DIE. This supposed deleted scene, if it even exists, is not canon and therefore does not count.

Sure...but if it takes a deleted scene in the Donner cut to show they didn't die, then it stands to reason anyone else would have assumed that a fall into a deep, dark, icy crevasse would likely end poorly for our villains. Supes does not get a pass because of shitty editing...
Did they fall on pillows?
Until I had heard about the removed scene, I always assumed, even as a kid in the theater, that all three died. I was ok with it, because frick them.

I agree with you completely about the originals being absolutely terrible. I watched S2 the other day and was laughing my arse off at how terrible it was. When I was a kid it was the greatest thing ever . This is not only the best Superman film ever made but the best origin story by far. Sure it had it's issues, editing being the biggest, but there's no denying they finally made a Superman that isn't cheesy and outdated. Seriously, if you are complaining that this movie wasn't good because it was too much of a departure from the previous films then please go re-watch them.

It feels blasphemous, especially for people of a certain age, to even suggest such a thing...but I have to be honest and say that I came to this conclusion after re-watching them again with my boys (10 and 6) this summer. I loved them as a kid, and assumed they would too. They did not, and I was left realizing that my fondness for them was based largely on my remembering self being for too kind. As it turns out after re-watching them, the only really solid thing about either of the first two was the casting of Reeve as Superman and John Williams tremendous score. Given how much else happens in both movies, that's not nearly enough.
Ran across this the other day...I found it funny.
Everything Wrong With Superman The Movie in 5 Minutes

Most people aren't complaining about it being a departure from the original movies. Most people, including myself, didn't like it because it's such a departure from the Superman character.
A good review by Mark Waid who wrote the Superman: Birthright series.

The 1st 3 minutes of that video are stupid, doesn't really say anything worthwhile until it gets to Lex Luthor.

I can understand that and honestly those Superman movies were what got me interested in comics in the first place which is why it sucks to have that feeling about them now.
Personally, as I got older, I grew to dislike the Superman comics. I just feel that the story of Superman is boring. The character stalemated in the early 90's and that's why Doomsday was created, to bring life to the comic through the death of Superman.
I do understand the gripes of the movie being a departure from the character and maybe that's why I like it that much more. I'm also a huge Batman fan so it's hard for me to love any Superman adaptation. That being said Superman will always be the most iconic character in comics because of what he represents.

So you're saying you don't necessarily agree with my take, but I have some legitimate, well-supported points, rather than just $hitting all over everything (which I try, really, really hard not to do. I thought I gave some kudos to MoS in this thread - I really did)?

I like movies. I like good acting, I guess - and that just isn't given the premium it once did.

It was weird bc not even batman killed his villains directly in the Nolan series
He caused Miranda's truck to crash which he knew would kill her and kill her it did.
