I've always had shotguns and loaded them up with whatever I had hunted lately but I picked up a shotgun the other day for home defense and was going to put some specific shells in it for its intended purpose.

I live in an apartment and I'm sure these walls are paper thin so I currently have some highbrass 7.5s.

What do you have in your shotgun(s) at home?
What would you suggest for my scenario?

I have 7.5 in my 12 ga pump with the plug removed right next to my bed along with my.45 for back up.
The way our home is set up a fire fight would hit my kids rooms if i were to fire just out our bedroom door. I have tested my shells at our camp with 2 sheets of sheetrock and at 20ft it did not go through the second sheet, but did the first pretty much.

At close range (10' or so) bird shot will no spread very far and will be like a slug. Course this also means it will penetrate wall. So just soon go with buckshot of your choosing.

Here's an interesting concept as of late (frangible shot slugs).

I haven't tried it personally, but may have merit in an apartment situation.

LINK (blasts a hole through a hog's head)

and

LINK (begins to disintegrate when passing through drywall?

Best article I've seen on HD shotgun ammo selection

AR15.com

quote:

The only shotgun ammunition that will consistently reach the FBI minimum of 12 inches penetration is buckshot or slugs.

quote:

No birdshot load will reach the required penetration to reach vital organs or the central nervous system. Birdshot makes shallow and gruesome wounds, but it has been shown to be a very poor Stopper.

When I travel, I leave Mrs Cove the BPS, loaded with whatever I have left over from duck/goose season. I think I've got her fixed up with some 3" Hevi Shot in BBB right now. If she stays calm and hits like she usually does, I figure it will make him hold still. Fnny, because she is 4'12" tall and 100lbs soaking wet, but she can shoot that BPS as well as I can when she wants to.

If I had an HD shotgun, I would likely alternate 00 Buckshot and slugs.
