College Baseball - Not the bats - but the CWS

Skip may have been at the right place (in philosophy at the right time)...
I don't think he could be what he was if he was younger, thus hired later....
College baseball was not significant to administrations, no money in it....
Bertman showed the nation that baseball can be important enough to draw 5,000 - 7,000 spectators....
There has been A LOT of talk about the bats...
Not the bats, the bats are giving us good baseball....
BUT; in Bertman's era, it was the CWS that made college baseball fun....
it was winning those championships in that fashion thta drew people to Alex Box....
Not the season, and not only HRs.... the CWS...
Bertman at LSU caught the imagination of many ADs regarding what college baseball could be...
the CWS helped a lot...
But, making the championship into a 3 game series, and making a ball park pitcher friendly.....
Has maybe done a lot to take what the Bertman era did.....
LSU baseball is good! real good!
That was a good team that went to Omaha in 2013, but the CWS is a new puppy, and LSU is just one of the several upper echelon pograms now..
Yes! we have the best fans.... but on the field, it has gotten a lot more equal....
The fans and the history of the Bertman era will keep national recruits attracted...
But it is not Maneri, it is not the bats...
It's the results of Bertman's success as an example, and the NCAA allowing to change Omaha the way it has.....
The season is still great, great games, great storylines, great baseball.... the bats haven't changed that....
But the pinnacle of the sport does leave something more desired for college baseball fans...
the NCAA has messed with Omaha... and you know what the say... don't fix what is not broken...
Well, they didn't adhere to that......

There's nothing wrong with Omaha. LSU lost because they were unable to produce runs, something they had been having trouble doing late in the season. Our biggest hitters over the season (rhymes, bregman, jacoby and ibarra) totaled one hit all together. It gets old hearing people say that there is a problem with the bats or the sport in general. The only problem was the teams inability to adjust at the plate and get hits.

You are right, we absolutely showed up without bats. 4 of our 5 biggest hitters scrounged up 1 hit between them. But it's fair to admit that an LSU team going to play in Rosenblatt has nowhere near the same advantage as TD Ameritrade.

With all that said, and to see first hand how Omaha has changed, do we change the way we recruit at LSU and attempt the "small ball" gimmick that seems to work over there?

I might be wrong but I don't see how TD Ameritrade is any less advantageous or more pitcher friendly than Rosenblatt. The field dimensions are exactly the same. LSU just played poorly when it counted the most. It sucks as I think if LSU bats had been hot they would mow down the field. shite happens.

Not necessarily change the way we recruit, but hire a specialist who can teach our players how to hit these new bats and get more base hits.

We had a team average of .308 going in to CWS
UCLA was like .251

Agreed. I think it's in the mindset. LSU was able to get timely hitting all season, yet LSU seems to struggle getting timely hits late in the season. 3 total runs during a 2 game span?

thats it. all we needed was hits. we didn't need HRs. we just needed timely hitting which eluded us in both games.

we lost because of lack of hits ---specially with men on base and errors. end of story.
Having said that. the new stadium is giving some mighty boring baseball.
They have, likely unintentionally, cut the legs out from the power teams and given the advantage to "small ball" with the depth of field.
The above, and the way the wind comes into this new stadium kills the production of HRs and comebacks from any kind of deficit.
Personally, I find these 2 to 1 games BORING..NCAA needs to look at this field and fix it...otherwise..who wants boring baseball?

You can't be serious? When the pitcher is not afraid to groove a fastball and is actually encouraged to throw them right down the middle as a part of the winning strategy, that's good baseball?

People, please stop with the small ball. LSU needs to change it's approach at the plate and drive the damn ball, not bunt 12 times a game. Bregman waited until his last AB to finally hit a line drive to right field. That cant happen. LSU as a team went 15/68 (.220 avg) and left 20 on base. Small ball will not change that. Focusing on driving the ball middle/away will change that.

We have not adjusted to the changes in college baseball ......if we need to bunt runners to advance then to win games then make adjustments ......we all know that gorilla ball is gone ..bats and the size of the CWS park did play a role in the outcome ....so what if you need to bunt your best hitter...I know a little boring baseball

It's not the bats.....they were the same ones LSU used all year.
It COULD have been the field. However.....the field was the same for both teams.
It MAY have been the fact that the bats went cold, and the competition got better.
I'm not going to whine about anything. It's nice if you can win, but when you show up to play, you're not always guaranteed to win. The other guy might be good, too.

Nice background. I like a lot of what you wrote there. Omaha has always been an equalizer. Even with Bertman's strong teams, it took him years, numerous appearances and multiple approaches (i.e., motivational speakers, movies, ex-players on the bus/plane, watch the other team, not watch the other team...) to break the psychological barrier. In my opinion, that's all we ran in to this year. Oh yeah, and it's baseball. We ran in to that too.

how would bunting guys over (and giving up an out) have helped us score more this weekend. Please tell me. We had plenty of guys in scoring position all freakin weekend. We had a horrible approach with runners on. The only player that was focused on driving the ball the other way was freakin Laird as crazy as that sounds. We needed to hit with RISP. We left 20 on base. How will bunting help get those runners home? Im all ears...
