He's certainly a top 5 guy. But he couldn't win on clay. That dings him.
Fair enough.
Who do you have in your top 5?
Fed, Nadal, Sampras....

During Fed's prime years he had a 95.7% win percentage in grand slams, from 2004-2007. That is with Nadal in the field for three of those years. That is a ridiculous win percentage across all surfaces.
But Nadal had just barely sprouted pubes.

Half of them were against Andy Roddick.

Thanks captain obvious
From the OP:

But what [Nadal] established is that Roger Federer is not the greatest of all time. . . He's removed Roger Federer from that discussion.
My comment:
quote:I was disagreeing with the quote in the OP. Evidently, it's not as obvious to everyone as it is to you.
Federer is the GOAT.

ctually think the women's field has never been stronger, so this isn't quite back in the dayism.
Really?
It blows.

But only a small group absolutely dominating the field normally is a sign that the overall field isn't that good.
I disagree, Nadal and Djok are arguably the two most physically gifted tennis players of all time.

Sampras v. Fed (in their prime)
Who wins?

I agree with this. As great As Borg was. Even with todays equipment [IN HIS PRIME] Either one would destroy him.........

1) Kornheiser is not a tennis expert, so I don't trust his opinion
2) nadal is the greatest ever on clay. that doesn't make him the greatest of all time, nor does it knock what federer has done on the two other surfaces.

The same argument can be made that Federer was in Depends in 4 of his Grand Slam finals losses to Nadal.
It's a shame that they aren't really in each other's prime. I think if Nadal can win two more US or Australian Opens, then that certainly propels him.
I never liked Nadal, but now that he seems to be on a bit of a decline (because of the physical ailments), I find myself rooting for him more. Plus, Djokovic is just so damn unlikable.

Fed, Nadal, Sampras....
Fed, Nadal, Sampras, and Borg are my top four. I could go a few different directions with the fifth, depending on what criteria I deem the most important. Pancho Gonzalez, Laver, Agassi, Johnny Mac, and, yes, even Djokovic are in the mix.
Johnny Mac doesn't have the best resume, but for a time he was untouchable.
Laver won a lot of slams, but it was in that weird transition period at the beginning of the open era. I'm just not convinced he was as great as his numbers might indicate. Plus, he was like my size. He's tough to assess.
Pancho Gonsalez is the one guy from the before the open era that had real deal athleticism and power in his game. Many tennis historians have said that if they needed one guy to play a tennis match with their life depending on it, they'd go with Pancho. It sucks that none of us have seen him play, but I have to give the "old timer" nod.
Agassi had the cleanest groundstrokes of any player in history. His hand-eye was otherworldly. This was what allowed him to keep playing into his mid 30s when he was moving around the court like an old man. It's a shame that he squandered so many years of his would-be prime. But that doesn't detract from his greatness.
Novak Djokovic, when his game is one, might be the best tennis player I've ever seen. It doesn't make any sense to me how he went to the 2007 USO final, and then won the ensuing 2008 Aussie Open and then just floundered for the next three years until he unleashed himself into Novak 2.0 in 2011 and harnessed his obvious physical gifts. Novak will age better than Nadal, though, and so we'll see a lot more greatness out of Djokovic in the years to come.

He isn't a tennis expert, and I wouldn't expect you to trust his opinion.
The point he made, whether right or wrong, wasn't unreasonable, and is a statement most media members wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. So, I respect that he came out and said it.
