There is almost as much sexual content in the books as in the show, so if you think the series is too mature for her then the books will be as well.
ETA: Profanity isn't near as bad in the first book either. Maybe seen 2 f-bombs and 1 c-word and that's about it honestly.

At least half the sex scenes in the show are either made up or happen between characters that do not have a POV in the book, so we would have never read about them.

I don't agree with that, & no I wouldn't let my 12 year old read them yet.
