Anyone know the story about how Alex ending up in Baton Rouge?

Yep. Alex Bregman was injured in his senior season and didn't play. During the draft last year, Alex came out and said he was coming to LSU if he wasn't drafted in the 1st round. He was approaced in the second round by some MLB team and asked if he wouldn't mind signing, he told them no, he was coming to LSU.

The rest is history. Although someone did take a chance and draft him in the 29th rd. But he should have been a 2nd rounder if not for signability.

I would MUCH rather Nola at SS but Bregman's at bat is insane. The fielding will definitely improve though.

ETA: It's funny how people are quick to forget one of the all time best fielders in LSU history. That speaks to how good Bregman is though

In all seriousness, there are time it seems he's in lala land out there which is why I would put him behind Nola; his glove is also not as good. Overall though he is a much better player and prospect.

I agree with everything you're saying, and he was the MOP of the Regional, but why on earth would he go away from what got him here?

Why go to batting gloves, no stirrups, and long pants at this point in the season??????????????

Lane Mestepay destroyed every Freshman record and is the best Freshman pitcher we have ever had, imo

Lane Mestepey had an 11-3 record with a 3.75 ERA in 2001. Pitching 139.1 innings, he had a 5.10 K/9 and a 1.40 WHIP.

Another pitcher had a 12-1 record as a Freshman with a 1.98 ERA. Pitching 109 innings, he had a 8.09 K/9 and a 1.05 WHIP.

Guess the pitcher.

His 52 RBIs is second on the team behind Mason Katz and is only 1 behind last season's team leader, Raph Rhymes who had 53 in 2012.

I wondered too, but I see he obviously knew what he was doing with two of his best offensive games of the season with the new look.

That's like comparing a 1970's mustang to a 2013 mustang. Different technology back then. There is no way he would be sub 2.0 ERA back then
My point is that Mestepey "destroying LSU freshman pitching records" shows a lack of knowledge of LSU baseball history.

no I agree with you on that. Very solid numbers though for his freshman year considering the era. Freshman pitchers in the 90's-early 00's were torched on the reg

Tough call on the best. Some other great competition. Todd Walker obviously, another that often gets overlooked is Blair Barbier, he had a great freshmen year and was on of the reasons we won in Omaha that year. Was also a great leader. I wouldn't put him ahead of Walker or Bregs but Barbier should be in the discussion.
