Why the '13 defense will be fine - Positive thread and may be lengthy

Personally I find this team, more so the defense, mirrors the 2010 tigers a lot.
LSU Tigers 2010 returning offensive starters: 6
LSU Tigers 2010 returning defensive starters: 4
LSU Tigers 2013 returning offensive starters: 10
LSU Tigers 2013 returning defensive starters: 5
Going into the 2010 season, we lost several defensive starters due to graduation and the NFL, and were also coming off of a promising season in regards to improvement from 08 to 09.
True Freshmen and Redshirt Freshmen like Eric Reid, Tyrann Mathieu, Sam Montgomery, Keke Mingo, and Bennie Logan bursted onto the scene.
Who is to say that the same thing can't happen? Although the '10 defense was anchored by Claiborne and Peterson..Anthony Johnson is primed to have a breakout year on the field and in the locker room as a leader.
Danielle Hunter, Christian LaCouture, Tradavious White, Dwayne Thomas, and Rashad Robinson can definitely repeat what the '10 recruiting class accomplished. Anchored by our best LBing unit in years, and with Craig Loston and Anthony Johnson anchoring the other 2 units, I firmly believe this will be a SOLID group, and will put up similar stats as the '10 squad.
ONE THING THAT IS DIFFERENT BETWEEN THE TWO TEAMS:
We will finally have an offense.

It's always football season my friend. You're no more pumped up about tomorrow than I am..but I've been thinking about making this for a month. Some of the words finally came to me, so I made it.

Last year was the first year in a while that we didn't have at least two CBs with extensive experience returning.
We don't have that problem this season. Our defensive backfield is going to be a plus, as usual. Having the Jalens back there with a year of experience is going to give great results. Plus Micah Eugene in the Nickel and Dime. And the true and RS freshmen corners that will be worked in.
It's exciting.

Exactly. Mills and Collins will both be BIGGER and FASTER. Theres always the chance that their coverage skills will not improve greatly(although, the past 4-5 years they have for starting DBs), their man to man blocking/pressing at the line will definitely be improved. Part of the problem I think we had with our secondary last year was that WR's were able to break off without having a fight at the line.

Also, everyone's predicting a huge drop off from the pass rushing game. It's definitely okay to think that..but with our MUCH improve line backing group, we'll be able to trot out defensive ends without fear of giving up the huge run on a draw.
Our pass rush wasn't exactly great like in '10 and '11. I personally think it will be similar to last year, but with better run support on the second level.

Well in 2010 sam got hurt like 4 games in and mingo, reid and tm7 werent starters all year ling.
Think about our dbs, mills and collins have more starts under their bekts than pp had his frosh year, more than simin had his frosh year, more than reid had his frosh year, more than tm7 had his frosh year and more than taylor and brooks had befire their jr and sr years. All were drafted.
Rosco has played as much as mingo and sam had at this point in theur career. He was also rated higher than both coming out.
So experience is still there.
If anything, this could be shaping up to be 2011 d all over again. We just need that ball hawk on d. And im guessing bewtween some if the track guys and obj, we can find a return game in st.
Im not worried, sec schedule may be stronger, maybe not if tamu steos back and we dont see much imorovement from state, arky and aub. And of course our ooc is no where close to 2011.
Odd year with a sr qb and a hungry d, you get my drift.

Great points. I was thinking of mentioning the extended experience but you for sure worded it better than I could have.
Alabama = Alabama
Oregon = A&M
Arkansas = Georgia
I'm not worried about Florida and Ole Miss, to be completely honest with you.

not worried about the pass rush because thats not our style anyway. mingo and same rarely came hard around the edge last year. chavis plays the sit and wait game and i like it

I think oregon is still a better program than tamu rt now. Obviously the coaching change will prob change that.

I've been telling everyone that cares to listen to me in person that our D is going to be good. Not just fine, but good.
Everything you say is a great example of why. Another?
When have you been let down by Chavis? I have faith that he can produce a good to great defense year in and year out with our recruits. Until I'm proven wrong I will continue to have faith in Chief.

My only comment is that you overlooking how good Barrow is.
He is our top returning tackler with 104 from last year. He was outshined by Minter last year, but he is no slouch.
I think we have great experience at each level.
