I only needed 3 on my old house, so we went and bought 6 old regular shutters for $15 each, then attached 2 to each other and added a bracket on top.
Presto plantation shutters.
We were covering up some ugly windows so it worked well.

It's not that bad drilling holes for the moveable louvers is boring but its not too bad. The process is very simple with the rockler jig. Painting them! Now That might be another story.

Built this as well. Even after buying the lumber it still came out cheaper than the racks the manufacturer was selling.

I dug two about 24" deep and didn't have to cut thru hardly any roots at all. I still need to add another 4x4 in the back. I decided to just pour a little footing for that one so I didn't have to dig. I'll see how it turns out. I've been making this up as I go for the most part.
