Nah. Jordan, Bunkley/Jenkins and Hicks are a perfect 3-4 front line IMO.

Agree. I think they just can't keep Hicks off the field anymore. Funny how quickly our d-line turned into almost exactly what you want in a 34.

It sounds like this pos change for Will Smith is nothing more than a DE playing in 2 Pt stance. Don't think he will be covering #Saints

This is the dumbest thing. When you put him on the field, you're signalling who one of the rushers are, which sort of defeats the purpose of a 3-4.

I wouldn't fully believe Garic. If he is going to play there he will have to cover from time to time, especially if the TE is on the weak side/RB releases to the weak flat and the OLB had man on him.

At that point you have to try to flip OLBs, shift responsibilities or audible otherwise if they never expect him to cover.

All that said, the weak OLB does rush more often than the other LBs so whoever is there will not cover too often.

he did a bit of covering as an 4-3 de as well every now and then they dropped him into the flats and stuff.

I mentioned that in a previous post. He isn't a stranger to coverage. Though the last couple of years he has become a bit big to try to stick with TEs and RBs. Hopefully he has slimmed down.

I don't think the Joker covers all that often. They usually bump TEs and RBs and that's about it.

I'd liken it more to kind of a zone coverage, not necessarily a sprint man to man type coverage.

True but you still have to stick close enough to make a tackle even in zone. Guys got outside too easy on him.

But like I said, if he can slim down a bit(275-280ish) I think he'll do okay unless they truly expect him to never cover. That would make him a bit light for DE though.

Yeah, zone turns into man real quick if you can't keep up.

I also read that Tom Johnson will be competing with Hicks for the starting RDE spot opposite Jordan. That means Jordan is staying in his spot(for the most part; I expect guys to change positions a good bit on this D) and Johnson and Hicks will be the main 2 competing for Smith's old spot.

Think he's backing up Jordan but not 100% on that. If he outplays the young guys he'll start but I don't see it.

Also we have some interesting camp battles now that guys are saying where they are starting camp at.

RDE: Johnson and Hicks
NT: Bunkley and Jenkins
Strong OLB: Butler and Wilson
Weak ILB: Vilma and Hawthorne
Weak OLB: Smith and Galette
Nickel: Robinson and White(along with Jenkins and Vaccaro)
FS: Jenkins, Vaccaro, and Abdul-Quddus
SS: Harper and Vaccaro

Only the Corners(Greer and Lewis), Lofton, and Jordan are sure starters. They also have a bunch of young guys I didn't mention(some UDFAs, some drafts picks, some guys from last year or the year before) but could surprise people.

Stolen from SR:

quote:

If Will Smith loses 20-25lb's he will be the most explosive pass rusher on this roster easily. Smith is essentially the same weight as Jordan currently, anyone who doesn't think Smith is more explosive than Jordan needs glasses. Galette and Wilson are our most explosive pass rushers and both are 25-30 pounds lighter than Smith. When Smith was a rookie and playing at a svelte 265-270 he looked like a more fluid Galette when it came to explosiveness and first step ability. If Smith can lose 20 -25lb's I have no doubts about him playing a significant role as a Jack Olb

quote:

He's been our best defensive player forever, except for Sharpers year. Most held lineman in all of football. I'm thinking OLB he will be a terror for the quarterbacks. If he doesn't get the sack cam will, watch. Right here right now, Will Smith will be an all pro this year!

In the last four to five years though? I'm not sure I've seen him drop back since then.

I really don't see him playing OLB that often. I might bring him in on first down every so often and if they shift a TE or H-back to his side, have Lofton call an audible and shift to a 4-3. You'd have Jordan, Bunkley, Hicks and Smith on the line, Lofton at ILB and Butler/Gallette & Vilma at OLB.

Do that in week three and throw everyone off.

Certainly makes sense. They like him, but not as a 34 DE in this defense. They also have him at an acceptable salary, so why not give him a shot to stand up and play OLB?

If it works, great; if not, then they did all they could to keep a well-liked and respected veteran on the roster before cutting him loose (and possibly ending his career in the process).
