K rate still apparently high

He's got a 30% K rate right now. (Chris Carter is at 39%). I'm not certain Springer's K's are gonna go away. He's probably gonna be a pretty high strikeout guy. Think a more athletic Hunter Pence.

Every clueless poster who thinks the Astros are merely pulling a Cleveland Indians from Major League should read this article and get an idea of the organization's long-term plan and strategy (what people who follow the team already understand).

There's not much of an incentive in the draft for a good team to be mediocre, or for a mediocre team to be bad. But there's a huge incentive for a bad team to be awful. The Astros had more than $11 million of cap money to play with, and only one other team had even $10 million.3 And while the slot values are so high at the very top of the draft in order to allow teams to sign the draft picks with the most leverage, there's no law that mandates they do so.

quote:

The Astros could be bad, spend a modest amount on payroll, and have the benefit of a good draft position. Or they could be awful, spend a tiny amount on payroll, and have the tremendous benefits that go with the best draft position. The latter option saves millions of dollars and will probably lead to a faster rebuilding process. The downside is that you have to put up with people snickering at you for a while. It seems like a fair tradeoff.

quote:

Two years ago, the Astros' farm system was nearly as bad as the varsity team; Baseball America ranked their system 26th out of 30 teams before the 2011 season. The system Luhnow inherited after that season was a little better; they ranked 18th last year. This year, they were ninth, and that ranking figures to only get better with time. While minor league win-loss records are mostly meaningless, it's telling that the Astros' affiliates are a combined 88-60 this year. Two years ago, their minor league teams had the worst combined record of any organization in baseball.

better hope he's not a Drew Stubbs incarnate. Maybe hoping for a poor man's Mike Trout (.260 avg, 20+HR, 20+ steals, .310+ OBP) is a good view.

Drew Stubbs 162 career avg:

.242
19 homers
35 SB
.311 obp

Sounds like drew Stubbs is your poor mans mike trout

(According to Baseball America, more players on Opening Day rosters this year were signed by Luhnow than by any other scouting director.)

The baseball operations department is executing a solid plan. The business/PR areas, though, need to get their shite together now that they've canned Postolos by ensuring everyone has access to CSN and eliminating the other numerous PR blunders.

But it is pretty smart to shield the product on the field from the fans for the time being.

The gift that keeps on giving. PR took another hit today. Word came public today that in February, the Astros decided to cancel the Wives Gala which raised money for the Houston Area Women's Center and had been an annual event for 23 years. Crane e-mailed the organizer and told her that her services would no longer be needed. People are pissed about this one.

I guess I don't care enough about the PR side to worry.

The baseball side is what's important. All they have to do is win games and all these fans bitching and moaning and complaining right now will change their tune and will be sitting right back in MMP with everyone else.

Losing guys like JD, alienating Dierker and just completely disregarding past people affiliated with the organization wasn't a bright idea. I understand the desire to completely clean house, and it was needed to an extent, but you can't pretend like people weren't invested in the organization when you bought it. Fortunately it seems that Crane is finally grasping this.

Maybe so, but from what I'm reading, and I could be reading it wrong, it was Postolos all these guys had issues with in the beginning.

I know Crane and Biggio had issues as well and he's still at every game and always very noticeable.

That's a fair stance I guess. But you have to walk a fine line with that stance. If you alienate your fan base too much, they won't come back. Fans like those of us in this thread will put up with a lot before we throw our hands up. But I think we can both agree, the common fan is important to the Astros. The ones who don't follow the team as in depth as us. They see the team moving to the AL, low payroll, worst record in the league, putting up a money grab in left field, letting Deshaies walk, giving Dierk the middle finger and dumping a 23 year charity event and the disaster that is CSN Houston. Thus far, Crane's tenure has been a PR nightmare. The team needs the common fan to come out and buy a ticket. With seemingly countless PR blunders, a lot of people are gonna say screw it and not want to follow a team that shits on the community, its legends, employees and the field. As more comes out, it seems that Postolos wasn't a good fit in his role. Many people seemed to have a beef with him and from what I gather he was a total a-hole and got himself fired.

Any change that the Astros would pick up the Skeeters as an affiliate? Great facilities and close to Houston.
