Missed your post.

This was not the message the girl who answered the phone gave us when we called.

That may have been the case but that was not what the hostess told us.

When she said they were not taking reservations my followed up with "not al all or y'all are full"

The girl said "not at all, get here early for a table."

Regardless it seems like bad practice to hold table for an hour when you have people sitting outside waiting to be seated. Seems like they would be losing money.

I know it's a holiday and all but I still think the situation was poorly handled.

Guess we need to get on that mailing list

I still think you are missing the point on the table holding. While you might have gotten out before the noon block, most people wouldn't have, and they have no way of knowing who will and who won't take over an hour.

Should they sacrifice the good will of the people who made reservations for the walk-ins?

It's pretty standard practice, and I'm having a hard time believing you don't get it.
