first year I have gotten into recruiting and have only read the first 2 pages, but do these guys really have to spend $300-400 for every camp they go to?

Yes. It is an NCAA violation to waive that cost.

I see both sides to this, but once again the LSU staff is very good at the evaluation process. The in state guys that have committable offers have proven themselves at camp. True, camp alone is not the best assessment, film alone is good, but camp evals combined with film, meetings and conversations with coaches, guidance counselors, the athlete, his family, all of those things factor in to a full comprehensive evaluation. I understand the chicken vs. the egg argument, offer then I come to camp vs. camp to get an offer. I think at the end of the day, if the recruit REALLY wants to come to your school, he will come to camp.

Yes. It's very expensive and can really make parents reconsider sending their kids to camps. I know the cost is one the reasons that wildman almost did not send Brumfield to another LSU camp. That was a while ago though. Some apparently get that fee waived or paid for by someone else, but they're the exception to the rule.
