Ángel Cappa (Jorge Valdano's assistant during his time as Real Madrid coach between 1994 and 1996) has berated the current Madrid side for their elimination in this week's Champions League semi-final. Cappa was particularly severe with José Mourinho for his management of the team. "Borussia, Bayern and Barcelona all play with an idea in mind, Madrid don't. They don't play football", he told Catalan radio this week.

"If Mourinho leaves, it won't hurt Real Madrid, it won't mean a thing. The only thing he has brought to the team has been in training but out on the pitch? Nothing, zero. Any team is capable of playing better than Real Madrid. The only reason they have won anything is because they have a couple of first-class players - they don't win because they play decent football. Any team at regional level can play on the counter-attack; it's a basic for every team. Even if they replaced Mou with the local butcher, the team would still play the same. Madrid won't notice if he goes, it doesn't matter, it won't make any difference", Cappa added.

In contrast to Madrid, according to Cappa, Barcelona bowed out of the competition "with dignity", as he continued, "When it's your turn to lose, you have to take it like Barça did. They were exemplary".

So rolling over and bowing out 7-0 > than fighting like dogs to the last second and nearly pulling off a miracle?

Makes it hard to take anything else this has been nobody says seriously.

Barca lost 7-0 on aggregate but "they were exemplary" in the way they went out, but Madrid lost by a goal and they just don't play football? I think Herm Edwards needs to give this guy a little lesson. LINK

If counter-attacking can get your team the win then do it. It sure as hell worked better than Barcelona's exemplary playing style.

This is fricking stupid. Barcelona got anally throttled. How did they bow out with dignity?

This is the one element of football that is pretty fricking stupid. You do what you have to do to win (within the rules of the game). Style of play and coaches bitching to the media are temporary; trophies last forever.

Harsh, but true.
