At least in the eyes of the NFL and draft status.

Did Sam slack off on preparing or did Mingo have that big of a jump? It seemed that 2 years ago Sam would have been drafted as a top 5 pick.

everyone seems to be concerned about Sam's "passion for the game," but Mingo is probably the best specimen of his proportion since Thomas Henderson, sprinter speed, linebacker size, fast enough to get around the o-linemen that are almost twice his size, lot of potential options

Comparing their physical traits, Mingo is way more projectable as a pass rusher.

Teams discovering that Sam is a crazy person during the interview process only hurt his stock more.

At the time that they set forth on campus and Mingo's measurables dwarfed the entirely impressive measurables that Sam has. All that, and Sam had a catastrophic knee injury which he recovered from like a beast. So I guess, it has always been like that.

Mingo didn't make a jump. He was always considered a top 15 guy the entire season, and he was 1 of the few guys that didn't really move in the process. Plus, his athleticism and measurables are off the charts. Even in the NFL his size and speed is ridiculous/special.

Sam dropped. And some of it was because of his interviews and answers, but I think it's more of how does he fit into a defense? He's better suited for a 4-3 DE, but he isn't the biggest guy to play that spot. And he's not the most athletic guy to play an OLB in the 3-4. He, to me, is the ultimate tweener. His style of play, speed, and amount of athleticism is better for a 4-3 DE, but his size is better suited for a 3-4 OLB. He's an undersized DE, but a slow inexperienced 3-4 OLB.

Mingo is an insane athletic specimen as an OLB

Mingo was always a bit higher than Sam. He was always projected as a top 10 pick. Sam could have been up there with him as well but fricked up the draft process

The NFL is in love with guys they think can rush the passer in the next level. Even though Sam had more sacks last year, Mingo's speed off the edge made NFL teams hard in the pants.

The NFL is a QB driven league. Therefore, there is a premium on pass rushers that can get to the quarterback.

From that standpoint, Mingo brings an exceptional set of physical tools to the table. It's the same reason Dion Jordan went so high.

Mingo ran a 4.58 at 241 at the combine.
Sam ran a 4.81 at 262.

Mingo also tested better in the broad & vertical, which is an indicator of explosion. That's what teams are looking for. Explosive pass rushers.

Sam will play stongside, Mingo will probably play weakside.

Mingo still has a lot of growth potential too. He's got a great frame that he can add more weight to, without a considerable drop in speed.

IMO, Sam would have gone higher if he didn't gain all the weight before the 2012 season. He would have been more appealing as a pass rusher at 245-255, running in the 4.6 range, which I think he could have run at that weight, buy I may be wrong.

The effort issue probably caused him to drop too. All I know is he is tenacious on the field. I always see a max effort player. I also think he is kind of a silly guy, and maybe prone to saying odd things. The Texans linebackers coach said this about the effort issue:

quote:

Herring suggested that Montgomery got caught up in entertaining the media, given that he likes to talk, and that his film didn’t show a lack of effort -- something general manager Rick Smith has said he cannot accept from a player.

I think he goes into a very good situation in Houston. They just lost Connor Barwin, so there's an opening at LB. My only question about Sam is how he will do in coverage.

Sam is better overall, but Mingo has freak factor longer arms, higher vertical, little bit more speed. He was drafted higher not on what he is but what he can become.

Mingo has some unreal speed and agility that allows him to play DE or OLB in the NFL. He's a freak basically with regard to his speed and size.

Mingo is big and fast. Sam is big and has just decent speed. It's not about production in the draft but more about potential.
