When we go hike/backpack around Wallowa lake area (NE) Oregon we carry a gun. There have been many spottings.
Thanks a lot for that! We're planning on camping there later this summer. The wif is definitely not going to hear about this.
Oregon is one of only 2 states I've never been to but that changes this summer. We'll spend 2-3 weeks there on our trip and plan on at least the SW coast (coming up from the California Redwoods), Crater Lake, Bend, Mt. Hood, and Joseph. Maybe Portland just to see it though we're not much for the cities.

If you're camping around the lake and campsites you won't have to worry about them. Just make sure to bring food for the deer. They'll eat it right out of your hand. Kind of sad but fun for the mrs and kids at least.

Sounds like fun. I want to move. But my mom would track me down and shoot me JTTF if I moved her grandkids away again
Oregon looks great.

You'll be fine camping. If they came in that close it isn't for people it'd be for the game.

Have you figured out your driving route yet?

Not exactly. Tentatively it's up the Oregon coast about 100 miles from the California border, then over to Crater Lake, then to Bend and Sisters, then Mt. Hood. Then up into Washington for a couple of weeks (St. Helens, Ranier, Olympic Peninsula, Cascades). We'll likely hit Joseph on our way from Washington to Idaho and then close the summer out in Glacier NP before the long drive home. We will improvise according to the weather somewhat.

That is covering some serious ground in 2-3 weeks but prepare to see some of the finest scenery around (do not short-change Redwood country). We have taken 1- to 2-week vacations the past few years and have covered NW CA, Olympic Peninsula, San Juan Islands, OR/WA cascades, Yellowstone/Glacier on successive trips...never enough time. The biggest disappointment will be the quality of restaurants!
The US is one fine country for folks who appreciate nature. Enjoy.

Nothing better, anywhere. I took the kids gold panning today in a place that was just amazing, and reachable by road (which is rare for this area)
You don't have to leave the borders of the US to see the best scenery anywhere.

I was there a few years and I loved it, but the wife hated the cold.
There is only a month or two when its warm. Even in July we wore sweaters when shooting fireworks.
There is plenty of BLM owned land to hunt on within a couple of hours drive. You can hunt black bear, Roosevelt Elk and blackmail deer among others. A few years ago it was fairly gun freindly but it is being infiltrated with Californians so I don't know how long that will hold.

The total trip is going to be 11 weeks and around 12,000 miles. Big Bend, sky islands of Arizona, Sierras/northern California, mountains/desert of Nevada, Oregon, Washington, some of Idaho, Glacier. Maybe a bit rushed for all we are covering but there is a lot out there we've never seen. Glacier we have seen but so far it's the best place in the lower 48 and I can't wait to be back there. This country is the best in the world for a long road trip like this.
