Yea, by going back to college he will be a better basketball player in a year from now than he would be a year from now with an NBA club..
Haha come on man, that'll stunt his growth somewhat
Maybe it's not 100% strictly basketball skill. Maybe he doesn't want the tremendous pressure of having to be the savior of a shite basketball team? Maybe by going in next year's draft lower than he would in this year's draft, he will go to a better team with some better players and learn from them, instead of possibly going to a team full of young developing players.
I'm sure the same people complaining about him staying would be bitching if someone from their school left early instead of staying.

it's pretty funny to me that the same people who are saying Rivers should have stayed/could have benefitted from another year in college (completely in hindsight) are the ones pushing for Smart to leave college, citing he can get better coaching in the NBA.
i think there's a slight chance the kid know's he going to go later next year, so why not? he will get on a better team and not get stuck in charlotte, orlando, or phoenix.
just another way to look at it

I think it's a lot more likely he wants to return for another year of college life than being afraid of going to a bad team. Intangibles and leadership are supposed to be his strength, he's probably not afraid of Orlando or Charlotte.
