New LSU Tennis Facility

Anyone have an update on the new LSU tennis facility? If I recall correctly, the initial plans called for a state of the art tennis facility that was going to be built on the LSU South Campus out by Gardere/GSRI and was going to be some sort of public/private club type venture. However, I just read an article in last month's Reveille and see where they are now talking about a scaled down version with only 12 courts and the facility now being back on campus.
Anyone know what happened?
I see the new LSU women's coach has locked up a stacked recruiting class for this year and touted the planned facility (probably the original design) as a positive factor in luring some of these kids to sign with LSU.
Anyone know when they are looking to break ground on the new facility?

why move it so far out the way?

It doesn't look like they are moving it to LSU South Campus now; but I think the reason for moving it out there initially was the facility was originally going to have 20+ outdoor courts and maybe 9 indoor courts, with the hopes of building a facility that could host more post-season play. I guess they wanted to move out there because there was more land out there for the project as originally designed. However, that's just a guess on my part.

Link to article saying it's now going to be on campus?

Hopefully it's on campus. Not many people go now but if it was out on GSRI no one would go.

Yeah. Lets get the visiting players and fans mugged when they come in for a regional.

Are they still planning on the facility looking like this?

And where do they think they'll get the funding for that? From football?

They would be able to hold some tournaments like what Oak Knoll does over in Hammond with that setup.

I wish they would just tear down the dorms on Nicholson and use that space for new Olympic sport facilities.

as is true with almost all LSU sports facilities in past 20 years, private funding from boosters (I am willing to bet not you) will pay for this. yes, the profits from football do support some of the costs of other sports just like almost every other major D1 program. But not tax dollars and thanks due to TAF members of all levels.

Along with TAF donations.
Same can be said for the planned Gymnastics facility.

I think the new design is simply the indoor facility surrounded by 6 courts on one side and 6 on the other so that both the womens and mens can play at the same time if needed.

The facility is going to have 12 outdoor courts and 6 indoor courts. It's going to be located across the street from the New Alex box between the golf course and the dairy cow facility. It's scheduled to break ground this summer and it should be ready in time for the Fall of 2014.

Glad to hear it. I never liked the idea of putting athletic facilities at LSU South. There's still too much land between Nicholson and River Road that is underutilized.
