If I was you I would load up the truck and take a three week trip. Go to the places that interest you. See what the towns look like. You will find a spot you like.

That's basically what we're going to do. We probably won't get to stay that long this summer, but I'm sure we'll go back before we actually move.
I just thought I'd mention it here (forgetting I already had) and see if anybody brought up anything about these states that I didn't know - like they hate falconers or yoga instructors or something.
