the Leonhard relating to drafting is a reach IMO
We've had this Harper talk before. Here's a key mistake you are making...
It is not $3.6mil. We don't know the details but we do know $16mil of his contract is guaranteed. Even if the first two years were completely part of that (we dunno) that would be $9.9 million. That would leave $6.1mil that is guaranteed to him this year whether he was cut or not. So one, that would make a lot of sense. Two, it could only save a maximum of $1mil.

shite. I forgot about the amortized bonus having to be fully compensated in the year the player is expelled. I also admittedly forgot about the 16 mill guaranteed aspect. So I apologize for my cap stupidity. Every time I think I have a damn handle on this thing....
Carry on Harper...

you need to make a new thread for your new found thoughts on the Leon Hard situation and how it affects Harper/the Draft.

the capology can be a pain. Unfortunately that related to franchise performance is prolly as integral as performance on the field.
Sometimes ya think this or that on a player but until you draw the picture related the cap you don't really have a full view. Like Harper at costing 3.6mil to cut I'd be like, meh, maybe so. Ya might find a better player for dollar use. Ar $1mil or less savings and $6mil+ to cut then, oh welll, I made this contract boondogle, so we gotta live with it.

I'll limit it to 1 fail a day hopefully. I still want us to draft a safety. And still have no issue with us nabbing a top guy if the situation presents itself. For when Harper is gone next year and it only costs us $1.75 mill to part ways. (assuming what he will have been paid was part of his guarantee).

Yeah, I have come to understand it decently well this off-season. My flaw was just forgetting about the 16 mill was guaranteed.

There are some studly potential safety draftees for #75 range
I'd go
Shawn Williams Georgia
Rambo Georgia
Phillip Thomas Fresno St
-that was quite a NFL stuffed Bulldog squad...
Jarvis Jones, Ogletree, John Jenkins, Rambo, Cornelius Washington, Shawn Williams, Commings, Geathers ALL have draftable grades. 8 players to the NFL is impressive.

He could suck worse than any FA or Draft Bust like Jason David, Jonathan Sullivan, Alex Molden, Heath Schuler, and Mario Bates combined and I would still get the jersey on name principle alone.

Drafting a safety this year, anything earlier than 4th round is retarded. The only way I see us getting a safety in the 3rd is if we trade back. Only way I see us trading back is if none of the top OLB's (or college DEs) aren't available.
How in the hell can you say in any realm of reality that safety is more important than OLB or LT going into this year's draft?
1st OLB
3rd LT (maybe TM7 if available)
4th BPA Safety/WR
5th BPA WR/Safety
6th BPA Dartboard
7th BPA Blindfold dartboard
Trade Back Scenario
1st OLB/LT
2nd LT/OLB
3rd Safety
4th WR
5th-7th Whatever

Our safeties are pretty terrible. LT is obviously more important, but if Lane Johnson somehow manages to drop to us (or we trade up), I feel better about Butler/Junior/Wilson than I do Jenkins/Harper/IAQ/Bush.

I'm holding to my guns. A good pass rush makes bad secondaries look decent. A good pass rush makes decent secondaries look fantastic. A bad pass rush makes any secondary look like crap.
I just think the entire premise of this thread is just faulty. All I'm saying, now I will stop.

Can we trade back every pick? That seems to be the only way fans on this board will be happy about anyone we pick.
What if we just pull a Minnisota and not pick on time and let people pick before us? Would that make everyone happy?

I'm not a fan of the trade-back scenario at all. Even if a "star" OLB isn't available. I'd rather them get a marquee player at whatever position they feel would improve the team.
I was just saying the trade back is the only scenario that would make sense to even use a 3rd on a safety. Maybe if the draft goes all twilight zone and safety is the best pick available at 3rd? Don't know.

Well Harper only has one year left. And when I originally posted I was under the impression that it would save 3.6 mill if post June 1, so I was hoping to use that to address the tackle spot with a vet like McKinnie in FA. If still available after June 1. Top tackle that would be available to us at 15 or later would be Fluker because None of the big 3 will be there. Don't know how I'd feel about him coming in and being an immediate starter, so I'd rather go tackle in the 3rd (or 2nd if we trade back) since this years class is pretty deep. There's rumors swirling that the Dolphins are trying to trade up and grab the Raiders 3rd pick to get Fisher or Johnson because they don't see the the remaining one (presumably Johnson) getting past both Arizona and San Diego.

I'm just messing with you. It seems like every thread on here is about trading back though.
I'm guessing you don't like Rambo, Shamarko Thomas, Phillip Thomas, D.J. Swearinger, Sanders Commings, J.J. Wilcox or David Amerson?
They are all projected to be picked around that area.

By the time you get to the #75 range the need factor is much eclipsed by value. The later the round the more it is BPA.
Very few put safety as the top need. But again, say a #65 on your big board safety and a #85 overall 3-4OLB are there. Who do you take? Not you, but the Saints have a clear history on plucking BPAs regardless of need.
Posted on 4/9/13 at 7:19 pm to blueslover
The bottom line is we still need a safety that can cover and stop the run.

I agree with you there, but the need at LT is going to be quite apparent when the season starts and Brees can't stand in the pocket long enough to say one-two-mississippi.
I think the FA signings were good so far. I was disappointed they didn't release Vilma or Smith to get extra cap space for one of the FA tackles. I'm not saying they can't get one, but LT is one of the best leveraged positions in the NFL and the clock is ticking.
