Should I trade 1 bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 15 year old for 2 bottles of Eagle Rare 17 from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection?

No no no no no.
On taste alone, no. On value, no.
I would trade it for a bottle of George T Stagg and William Larue Weller. But not two bottles of Eagle Rare 17.
You should sell it to me, though.

Had a conversation today with an ´expert ´who swears Pappy Van Winkle is one of the fledgling century´s greatest hoodwinkings.
I´ve got no dog in the fight, and could care less, but I thought it important to mention (as we were talking about wine, and he brought it up).

I respectfully disagree. I've had the 20 and 23 year Pappy and I've had the 12 year Family Reserve and their Rye. The one thing they had in common was they all made me grin like an idiot, and very few bourbons are capable of that. The only ones who have come close to that same feeling of "Eureka!" are the 4 Roses Small Batch Limited 2012, the George T. Stagg, and the Elijah Craig 18. Taste is subjective, but for me Pappy is worth the chase and the price.

I'm gonna have to disagree. I would make that trade. I've had both and I'd rather have one bottle of eagle rare 17 than a bottle of pappy 15. I agree George T Stagg is good but I found the heat to be a bit much. I drink Bookers fairly often and don't find it as hot. Also, I really didn't care for Elijah Craig 18. Not worth the price at all. As you said though, taste is subjective.

All good but I prefer the pappy Rye over the other pappy's and it is less hyped and more affordable. The 4 roses small batch was too spicy for my tastes but I hear it grows on you.

I have heard the same thing at several different places.

I usually love the Single Barrel but the last bottle I picked up was too spicy.

Good looking finding the Pappy rye. It's my white whale.

I turned it down. Now the guy is offering me either an Eagle Rare 17 + Stagg or Eagle Rare 17 + Jefferson's Presidential Select 18 for my Pappy 15.

Can anyone link me to that several page thread on Bourbon from a couple weeks ago? I can't find it.

Either one of those are solid offers. I prefer the Stagg to the JPS18. But like I said: I'm not wild about the ER17.

Get him to make it Stagg + JPS 18 and call it a day.

Yeah but I've already got 2 JPS 18's in the bunker. I think I would do Stagg and William Larue Weller for the 15. I still have an unopened 20 on the shelf. Went through one bottle of it at Christmas. The problem is I've never tried the 15. Make's it hard to part ways with it.

Don't get me wrong, the 15 is an exquisite bourbon...as said above, it passes the "grinning like a fool" test...
I did a flight of PVW 15, VW 12, and the VW Reserve Rye, and the rye caught my attention more than the 15. Not to say that will be the case for everyone, it's all preference, but it wasn't even close which one I preferred.
I actually thought the 15 I had back in the fall of 2011 was a little better than the 2012 release. Can't put my finger on why...
If you really want to try the 15, wait til the fall and overpay for a glass at any of the bars that have the fortune of getting a bottle.
Demand has skyrocketed so much, it's sometimes easy to overvalue limited commodities like these...
Keep your JPS, and maybe try to do Stagg/WLW plus cash before parting with anything else...
