we could still keep Lopez and pay some luxury tax $ correct?
It's pretty much mathematically impossible to go from under the cap into the tax in one offseason. Once you're under the cap you don't have access to most of your cap exceptions, so you have to make actual cap space for moves. The Knicks traded for Bargnani yesterday and the league office rejected the trade because it violated the cap rules. Demps manages the cap pretty well so I think there's zero chance this happens, but if he offers Tyreke too much money for instance, his signing could be rejected. Or if some trade kicker from Holiday's contract added more to our cap than expected Demps might be forced to dump more guys to make room for the deal he gave Evans. Again, not likely to happen, just illustrating that the cap rules must be abided by.

Gotcha. Just hate to lose Lopez just bc I feel he is very serviceable for his price tag.

I thought so to, but it's not difficult. We're going to be right up at the cap if/when we sign Evans (unfortunately we can't combine the space with the 150% of outgoing salary trade rule like we thought). But once there, you can go over the cap by taking back 150% of the salary you send out. So if we're at $1m under, we can send out Vasquez's $2.2m and get back up to $3.4m, putting us over. I wouldn't be shocked it things pan out exactly like that for a Webster type SF.
