Why is everyone sold on Akiem Hicks being a solid 3-4 DE?

He has never played the position and although I admit he showed flashes from the inside last year. Why is everyone sold on him completely. Just a question and I am by no means hating, curious is all.
That being said would you be shocked with a 3-4 DE drafted
Margus Hunt
Bjorn Werner (don't know if he's even considered for that)
Seems to me this scenario hasn't been mentioned at all, but it could happen
Thoughts???

He fits the mold of a 3-4 DE.
quote:
They must be strong at the point of attack and are aligned in most cases head-up on an offensive tackle. First and foremost, they must control run gaps. Size and strength become more of a factor for linemen in 3–4 defenses than in 4–3 defenses because they move primarily within the confines of line play and seldom are in space using athletic ability. Ideally 3–4 DEs should weigh 285–300 pounds (129–140 kg) and be able to beat double teams by getting a push.
He demands double teams, can beat them at times, and is big enough to fill the gaps he is assigned to.

He looks he could be a Ngata clone IMO.

He is the perfect size and athletic enough to be either a 4-3 DT or 3-4 end imo. Kinda like Glenn Dorsey.

It's not going to be hard for him to pick up regardless if he has played it or not. What's hard to pick up is if you have the tools to play that spot and he does.

there's only been speculation as to where he will play. He could be exclusively DE or NT or he could be rotated (ala Ngata). With Smith back I tend to think the emphasis will be inside rotating with Bunkley.
a 3-4DE at #15 would generally be considered a push for the position. They don't demand the premium as 4-3 DE rush specialists. I'd say that was a large part of how and why we got Cameron Jordan at #24.
As for Hunt he's prolly fallen into 2nd Rd status. I'd go so far as to say he's more likely 3rd Rd than 1st.
Werner is #15 on our ST Big Board. Highly probable to be available but 14 others peeps want before him. If we were 4-3 he would be a perfect value/need fit.

did he ever actually get to campus or did he just sign his LOI before they realized the recruiting violations?

Did you know that the Saints signed Kenyon Coleman DE to bolster the line?
The Saints also restructured Will Smith.
Tom Johnson has also been discussed around here as a possible DE.
Hicks has also been discussed being used as a possible NT.
I don't know who the "everyone" is your referring too. It seems to me that the main consensus around here seems to be that the only lock is Jordan on the def line.

If it helps, on NFL Network they showed the Saints depth chart(actually depth chart in the Saints draft war room) and had Smith/Bunkley/Jordan as starters and Hicks as Smith's backup with Johnson as Bunkley's backup(though I think both backups could play either spot).
And as mentioned we signed Coleman to help play end.
I think we are pretty set on the line but may want to draft someone in a later round to have a young guy for next year when Smith and Coleman are gone.

Big fan of this guy. Crazy athletic. I dont think we are as weak at DE as we are at OLB. With a 4.6 40 and 38 reps on the bench i wouldnt mind him in a 3-4 DE or OLB.

I think there will be a heavier emphasis on competition this year and whoever shows best will get the job- regardless of contract or draft status. Payton wants some fresh fire like how the team was stirred up in '06.

Dumb.
Hicks will be solid at DE or NT. I'd prefer him at DE. His size, speed, strength, and long arms seem like a great fit for DE. Cam and Hicks would make a nasty combination.

whomever compared hicks to dorsey should be shot.

A lot of posters on here. Kenyon Coleman isn't a starter but will rotate I admit. Will Smith can't have that much left in tank. I was thinking of more of the future or am I looking too far ahead. Time will tell

Not a fan of this guy. He's 25 years old, he's not flexable (plays stiff) and wasn't productive against average at best competition. He's just tall and blocks kicks. Plus, he's new to football. Not enough time to be teaching a 25 year old how to play a position. By the time he gets it, he'll be ready to retire.

I hear ya. Heck like I said we don't know outside of Jordan who will be where an when.
Its going to be a while till the coaches release a depth chart I'm afraid.

My thought is, if Hicks is a crapshoot, a question mark (and I was thinking he'd be a NG and not DE, but admittedly, what do I know?), then what are the potential draftees? In other words, who is to say that anyone the Saints will draft will come in and be a "solid" player? I think Hicks has just as good a chance of being a solid starter at NG or DE than anyone in the draft. Same goes for LB ... I think Martez Wilson is just as likely to be a difference-maker at OLB than Mingo, or Jones.
